Problem solving is a process of finding and implementing a solution to a challenge or obstacle. In most contexts, this means going through a problem solving process that begins with identifying the issue, exploring its root causes, ideating and refining possible solutions before implementing and measuring the impact of that solution.
For simple or small problems, it can be tempting to skip straight to implementing what you believe is the right solution. The danger with this approach is that without exploring the true causes of the issue, it might just occur again or your chosen solution may cause other issues.
Particularly in the world of work, good problem solving means using data to back up each step of the process, bringing in new perspectives and effectively measuring the impact of your solution.
Effective problem solving can help ensure that your team or organization is well positioned to overcome challenges, be resilient to change and create innovation. In my experience, problem solving is a combination of skillset, mindset and process, and it’s especially vital for leaders to cultivate this skill.
A problem solving process is a step-by-step framework from going from discovering a problem all the way through to implementing a solution.
With practice, this framework can become intuitive, and innovative companies tend to have a consistent and ongoing ability to discover and tackle challenges when they come up.
You might see everything from a four step problem solving process through to seven steps. While all these processes cover roughly the same ground, I’ve found a seven step problem solving process is helpful for making all key steps legible.
We’ll outline that process here and then follow with techniques you can use to explore and work on that step of the problem solving process with a group.

The first stage of any problem solving process is to identify the problem(s) you need to solve. This often looks like using group discussions and activities to help a group surface and effectively articulate the challenges they’re facing and wish to resolve.
Be sure to align with your team on the exact definition and nature of the problem you’re solving. An effective process is one where everyone is pulling in the same direction – ensure clarity and alignment now to help avoid misunderstandings later.
The process of problem analysis means ensuring that the problem you are seeking to solve is the right problem . Choosing the right problem to solve means you are on the right path to creating the right solution.
At this stage, you may look deeper at the problem you identified to try and discover the root cause at the level of people or process. You may also spend some time sourcing data, consulting relevant parties and creating and refining a problem statement.
Problem refinement means adjusting scope or focus of the problem you will be aiming to solve based on what comes up during your analysis. As you analyze data sources, you might discover that the root cause means you need to adjust your problem statement. Alternatively, you might find that your original problem statement is too big to be meaningful approached within your current project.
Remember that the goal of any problem refinement is to help set the stage for effective solution development and deployment. Set the right focus and get buy-in from your team here and you’ll be well positioned to move forward with confidence.
Once your group has nailed down the particulars of the problem you wish to solve, you want to encourage a free flow of ideas connecting to solving that problem. This can take the form of problem solving games that encourage creative thinking or techniquess designed to produce working prototypes of possible solutions.
The key to ensuring the success of this stage of the problem solving process is to encourage quick, creative thinking and create an open space where all ideas are considered. During this stage, you will often ask your team to iterate and improve upon your front-running solutions and develop them further. Finding the best solution is the goal of all problem solving workshops and here is the place to ensure that your solution is well thought out, sufficiently robust and fit for purpose.
Nearly there! Once you’ve got a set of possible, you’ll need to make a decision on which to implement. This can be a consensus-based group decision or it might be for a leader or major stakeholder to decide. You’ll find a set of effective decision making methods below.
Once your group has reached consensus and selected a solution, there are some additional actions that also need to be decided upon. You’ll want to work on allocating ownership of the project, figure out who will do what, how the success of the solution will be measured and decide the next course of action.
Set clear accountabilities, actions, timeframes, and follow-ups for your chosen solution. Make these decisions and set clear next-steps in the problem solving workshop so that everyone is aligned and you can move forward effectively as a group.
Ensuring that you plan for the roll-out of a solution is one of the most important problem solving steps. Without adequate planning or oversight, it can prove impossible to measure success or iterate further if the problem was not solved.
This is what we were waiting for! All problem solving processes have the end goal of implementing an effective and impactful solution that your group has confidence in.
Project management and communication skills are key here – your solution may need to adjust when out in the wild or you might discover new challenges along the way. For some solutions, you might also implement a test with a small group and monitor results before rolling it out to an entire company.
You should have a clear owner for your solution who will oversee the plans you made together and help ensure they’re put into place. This person will often coordinate the implementation team and set-up processes to measure the efficacy of your solution too.
So you and your team developed a great solution to a problem and have a gut feeling it’s been solved. Work done, right? Wrong. All problem solving strategies benefit from evaluation, consideration, and feedback.
You might find that the solution does not work for everyone, might create new problems, or is potentially so successful that you will want to roll it out to larger teams or as part of other initiatives.
None of that is possible without taking the time to evaluate the success of the solution you developed in your problem solving model and adjust if necessary.
Remember that the problem solving process is often iterative and it can be common to not solve complex issues on the first try. Even when this is the case, you and your team will have generated learning that will be important for future problem solving workshops or in other parts of the organization.
It’s also worth underlining how important record keeping is throughout the problem solving process. If a solution didn’t work, you need to have the data and records to see why that was the case. If you go back to the drawing board, notes from the previous workshop can help save time.

SQUID (Sequential Question and Insight Diagram) is a great model that allows a team to effectively switch between giving questions and answers and develop the skills they need to stay on track throughout the process.
Begin with two different colored sticky notes – one for questions and one for answers – and with your central topic (the head of the squid) on the board. Ask the group to first come up with a series of questions connected to their best guess of how to approach the topic. After some discussion, go back to question mode by responding to the generated answers or other points on the board.

TRIZ has 40 problem solving techniques derived from methods inventros and patent holders used to get new patents. About 10-12 are general approaches. many organization sponsor classes in TRIZ that are used to solve business problems or general organiztational problems. You can take a look at TRIZ and dwonload a free internet booklet to see if you feel it shound be included per your selection process.

Yet I'm convinced that problem-solving is a learnable trait , rather than just a birthright.
Business owners who are great problem solvers within any business are the best prepared to solve their customers' needs effectively as well. In fact, every business is about solutions to customer problems - no problems, no business. Problems are an everyday part of every business and personal environment.
Thus it behooves all of us to work on mastering the discipline of problem solving. Here is a formula from Brian Tracy, in his classic book No Excuses! The Power of Self-Discipline that I believe will help business professionals move up a notch in this category:
Many business leaders like to jump into solution mode immediately, even before they understand the issue. In some cases, a small problem can become a big one if you attack it with inappropriate actions. In all cases, real clarity will expedite the path ahead.
Remember, there are some things that you can do nothing about. They're not problems; they are merely facts of life, like natural disasters. Often, what appears to be a problem is actually an opportunity in disguise.

Problems continuously arise in organizational life, making problem-solving an essential skill for leaders. Leaders who are good at tackling conundrums are likely to be more effective at overcoming obstacles and guiding their teams to achieve their goals. So, what’s the secret to better problem-solving skills?
“Too often, people fail because they haven’t correctly defined what the problem is,” says David Ross, an international strategist, founder of consultancy Phoenix Strategic Management and author of Confronting the Storm: Regenerating Leadership and Hope in the Age of Uncertainty .
Ross explains that as teams grapple with “wicked” problems – those where there can be several root causes for why a problem exists – there can often be disagreement on the initial assumptions made. As a result, their chances of successfully solving the problem are low.
“Before commencing the process of solving the problem, it is worthwhile identifying who your key stakeholders are and talking to them about the issue,” Ross recommends. “Who could be affected by the issue? What is the problem – and why? How are people affected?”
He argues that if leaders treat people with dignity, respecting the worth of their insights, they are more likely to successfully solve problems.

“To solve problems, we need to commit to making time to face a problem in its full complexity, which also requires that we take back control of our thinking,” says Chris Griffiths, an expert on creativity and innovative thinking skills, founder and CEO of software provider OpenGenius, and co-author of The Focus Fix: Finding Clarity, Creativity and Resilience in an Overwhelming World .
To do this, it’s necessary to harness the power of the unfocused mind, according to Griffiths. “It might sound oxymoronic, but just like our devices, our brain needs time to recharge,” he says. “ A plethora of research has shown that daydreaming allows us to make creative connections and see abstract solutions that are not obvious when we’re engaged in direct work.”
To make use of the unfocused mind in problem solving, you must begin by getting to know the problem from all angles. “At this stage, don’t worry about actually solving the problem,” says Griffiths. “You’re simply giving your subconscious mind the information it needs to get creative with when you zone out. From here, pick a monotonous or rhythmic activity that will help you to activate the daydreaming state – that might be a walk, some doodling, or even some chores.”
Do this regularly, argues Griffiths, and you’ll soon find that flashes of inspiration and novel solutions naturally present themselves while you’re ostensibly thinking of other things. He says: “By allowing you to access the fullest creative potential of your own brain, daydreaming acts as a skeleton key for a wide range of problems.”
“Admitting to not knowing the future takes courage,” says Professor Stephen Wyatt, founder and lead consultant at consultancy Corporate Rebirth and author of Antidote to the Crisis of Leadership: Opportunity in Complexity . “Leaders are worried our teams won’t respect us and our boards will lose faith in us, but what doesn’t work is drawing up plans and forecasts and holding yourself or others rigidly to them.”
Wyatt advises leaders to heighten their situational awareness – to look broadly, integrate more perspectives and be able to connect the dots. “We need to be comfortable in making judgment calls as the future is unknown,” he says. “There is no data on it. But equally, very few initiatives cannot be adjusted, refined or reviewed while in motion.”
Leaders need to stay vigilant, according to Wyatt, create the capacity of the enterprise to adapt and maintain the support of stakeholders. “The concept of the infallible leader needs to be updated,” he concludes.
“Organisations, and arguably society more widely, are obsessed with problems and the notion of problems,” says Steve Hearsum, founder of organizational change consultancy Edge + Stretch and author of No Silver Bullet: Bursting the Bubble of the Organisational Quick Fix .
Hearsum argues that this tendency is complicated by the myth of fixability, namely the idea that all problems, however complex, have a solution. “Our need for certainty, to minimize and dampen the anxiety of ‘not knowing,’ leads us to oversimplify and ignore or filter out anything that challenges the idea that there is a solution,” he says.
Leaders need to shift their mindset to cultivate their comfort with not knowing and couple that with being OK with being wrong, sometimes, notes Hearsum. He adds: “That means developing reflexivity to understand your own beliefs and judgments, and what influences these, asking questions and experimenting.”
Leaders must be able to communicate problems in order to find solutions to them. But they should avoid bombarding their teams with complex, technical details since these can overwhelm their people’s cognitive load, says Dr Jessica Barker MBE , author of Hacked: The Secrets Behind Cyber Attacks .
Instead, she recommends that leaders frame their messages in ways that cut through jargon and ensure that their advice is relevant, accessible and actionable. “An essential leadership skill for this is empathy,” Barker explains. “When you’re trying to build a positive culture, it is crucial to understand why people are not practicing the behaviors you want rather than trying to force that behavioral change with fear, uncertainty and doubt.”

AI skills are in high demand in the job market as more companies seek to use the technology to compete with rivals and become more efficient.
Having AI expertise could also land you a position at a Big Tech giant, startups — or even get you a pay bump .
Nancy Xu, founder and CEO of AI recruitment company Moonhub, told Business Insider that her firm is seeing an uptick in demand for "technical generalists who can build AI applications, along with domain experts in several emerging areas of AI research, large language model training and fine-tuning, and machine learning infrastructure deployment."
She says some companies are going the extra mile to win AI talent. "We're seeing CEOs flying to candidates to close offers, significantly above-average sign-on and performance bonuses, new equity structures, customized benefits for individuals, and more," Xu said.
Iffi Wahla, CEO of global talent network Edge, said data scientists have been among the best-paid tech workers in recent years, partly because every business needs people who can understand and extract value from data. Companies want to spread AI skills across their operations, so those with a background or training in techniques such as prompt engineering on generative AI will benefit from increased job opportunities and pay, Wahla added.
Here are some of the most sought-after skills that may help you land a well-paying job in AI.
Aswini Thota, director of data science at financial service firm USAA, told BI that when hiring data scientists and AI engineers, he assesses candidates based on three key areas: technical prowess, business acumen and communication, and innovation.
Thota says data scientists are expected to be well-versed in Python and R, the most popular programming languages for building AI models, while some companies use C++ and Java.
They're also expected to have a foundational knowledge of statistics, as well as machine learning algorithms and frameworks in Python or R.

"A vast majority of organizations rely on cloud technology to store, analyze, and build models, so a working knowledge of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Snowflake, Microsoft Azure, Databricks, and similar platforms has become increasingly important in recent years," Thota said.
According to Thota, data scientists looking to land a job in AI should also have strong business acumen to grasp an organization's challenges and develop solutions. "Communication skills come into play when data scientists must explain the results and influence decision-makers to align with the technical approach they recommend."
When recruiting for senior or lead roles, Thota says he looks for candidates who have the potential to lead with innovation. "Hiring candidates with an innovative mindset helps us anticipate and address potential challenges before they become issues and also develop groundbreaking solutions."
Ram Srinivasan, a future of work leader at consulting firm JLL, says some of the most sought-after AI competencies include a combination of technical and soft skills.
They include having a "strong learning mindset and adaptability" because employers look for candidates who can quickly adopt new technologies and methods.
Srinivasan adds: "AI projects often involve complex challenges requiring innovative problem-solving skills. Collaborating effectively with diverse teams, including data scientists, project managers, and product developers, is also essential."
AI development poses ethical questions and risks that engineers and developers must navigate responsibly.
Srinivasan said tech workers should be able to spot potential AI applications across industries, assess their feasibility, and implement them effectively.
"This involves understanding various sectors, developing implementation strategies, managing organizational change, and measuring ROI. Skills in expanding successful AI pilots and facilitating user adoption are crucial."

American s are evenly divided in their preferences for the size of government. Yet a somewhat greater share wants the government to do more to solve problems than say it is doing too much better left to others.
There is a persistent belief that government is wasteful: 56% say it is “almost always wasteful and inefficient.”
However, a majority of Americans (58%) say government regulation of business is necessary to protect the public good.
Overall, 49% say they would prefer a smaller government providing fewer services, while 48% say they would rather have a bigger government providing more services.
Most Democrats prefer a larger government. For nearly half a century, Democrats and Republicans have differed in their preferences for the size of government. Today, those differences are as wide as they have ever been:
When asked about the proper role of government, about half of Americans (53%) say the government should do more to solve problems, while 46% say the government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals.
An overwhelming share of Democrats (76%) say government should do more to solve problems, while about a quarter (23%) say it is doing too many things better left to individuals and businesses.
By contrast, Republicans prefer a more limited role for government: 71% say government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals, while 28% say government should do more to solve problems.
There are also sizable demographic differences in these views:
Among partisans, there are wide demographic differences on the preferred role of government – especially among Republicans.
Hispanic Republicans (58%) are much more likely than White Republicans (21%) to favor a larger role for government.
Views among Democrats are much less divided, with at least seven-in-ten Democrats in each racial and ethnic group saying government should do more to solve problems.
Nearly half of lower-income Republicans (46%) say that the government should do more to solve problems, while smaller shares of middle- (22%) and upper-income (19%) Republicans say the same.
Wide majorities of Democrats across income groups say government should do more to solve problems.
In assessments of the efficiency of the government, a majority of Americans (56%) find it to be “almost always wasteful and inefficient.” A smaller share (42%) say government “often does a better job than people give it credit for.”
Overall, views on the efficiency of government have remained somewhat steady since 2019, with views today mirroring those five years ago.
Among partisans, a majority of Democrats (63%) say the government often does a better job than people give it credit for, while a large majority of Republicans (77%) say government is often wasteful and inefficient.
Views on the efficiency of government in both parties have remained steady since 2021.
While Democrats are generally more likely than Republicans to say government does not get enough credit, these views vary somewhat depending on which party holds the presidency:
This is consistent with shifts in views during prior administrations .
On the topic of government regulation of business, about six-in-ten Americans (58%) say that government regulation of business is necessary to protect the public interest. Four-in-ten, however, say government regulation of business usually does more harm than good.
These views have remained largely unchanged since 2017.

Americans are divided in their views on the country’s ability to solve important problems. About half (52%) of Americans say “this country can’t solve many of its important problems,” while 47% say that “as Americans, we can always find ways to solve our problems and get what we want.”
More Americans express confidence in the country’s ability to solve problems now than a year ago (47% now, 43% then). Still, the share saying this is lower than it was from 2019 to 2022.
Unlike assessments of government, there are no partisan differences in views on the country’s ability to solve its important problems.
In both parties, about half say the U.S. can’t solve many of its important problems, while slightly narrower shares say Americans can always find ways to solve the country’s problems.
Among age groups, younger adults are the most likely to express skepticism in the country’s ability to solve its important problems. About six-in-ten adults ages 18 to 29 (62%) say the U.S. can’t solve many of its important problems, while smaller shares of older adults say the same.
Overall, the shares of adults in each age group who voice skepticism on the country’s ability to solve its problems remain higher than they were in 2022.
However, older adults have grown slightly more optimistic on this issue in the past year. Views among the youngest adults are relatively unchanged from 2022.

Researchers found that service agents yield better results when they use warm language to start and end conversations, focusing on problem-solving in the middle.
We all know from our experience as customers that the things that salespeople say in a conversation affects our feelings and choices. A new study showed that the timing of language matters as well. By analyzing tens of thousands of moments or turns in service calls, researchers found that service agents get better customer satisfaction and purchase volume if they use warmer language at the start and finish of their interaction with a customer. Contrary to some common practices where a problem-solving mode is used right away, the results suggest that employees should use words that show competence only in the middle of a customer conversation.
Language plays a key role in almost every marketplace interaction. It’s how salespeople talk to prospects, leaders talk to teams, and customer service agents talk to customers. Recently, firms have been measuring and optimizing their language to manage the customer experience , automate service , and help make business decisions .

Good morning. As a little kid in Scotland, I remember my dad told me the ruling Labour Party was bad for business. Barely 30, he was an entrepreneur trying to support three kids in a land of strikes, power cuts, inflation and high taxes. We moved to Canada before the Conservative Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s prime minister in 1979.
Labour’s back! With yesterday’s U.K. election, Keir Starmer is set to become Britain’s first Labour prime minister in 14 years, promising to be both “pro-business and pro-worker.” (Click here for the Labour Party Manifesto —a term that some might associate with communism, until they see the accompanying photo of Starmer.)
Will this left-leaning centrist party be better for business than the right-leaning centrist party it’s displaced? Many suspect so, considering the volatility, years of wage stagnation and sluggish growth under the Tories. After all, the Conservatives instigated Brexit , brought us leaders who flouted COVID protocols or were outlasted by a head of lettuce . Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could have waited until 2025 to call an election, but he decided to call it early.
I asked two pundits I respect to weigh in on the impact of Labour’s win. Ian Bremmer, founder and president of Eurasia Group, called it “a much-needed positive story,” adding that “a Labour government is going to be good for the United Kingdom’s standing in the world and its economic outlook.” Moreover, a victory for Starmer would “allow him to deliver political stability and policy certainty—something the U.K. has been sorely missing for much of the last decade. Moreover, I expect Starmer to implement a coherent economic policy and a major reset with the European Union—both of which will improve the outlook for domestic and international investors.”
I also asked Azeem Azhar to weigh in. Along with being founder of Exponential View, the British thinker co-chairs the Global Futures Council on Complex Risk for the World Economic Forum. In his view, last night’s Labour win will prompt “businesses of all types, but particularly startups and climate tech firms, to breathe a sigh of relief. The promise of stable, disciplined government will unlock investment. Bosses who have been keeping their powder dry and investors worried about political volatility will be reassured. I expect an increase in investment and a growing belief in Britain’s tech and climate tech sectors.”

On Wednesday, Southwest Airlines said it will adopt a “poison pill” targeting activist investor Elliott Management. In June, Elliott bought $1.9 billion of stock and accused the airline’s leaders of having a “stubborn unwillingness to evolve.” Southwest’s shares have dropped over 20% in the past 12 months. Fortune
Apple gets an AI board seat
Apple’s app store chief Phil Schiller is reportedly getting an observer seat on ChatGPT developer OpenAI’s board. Fortune’ s David Meyer suggests the new board seat is Microsoft-backed OpenAI trying to hedge its bets, as it works with Apple to get OpenAI products on devices like the iPhone. Birmingham biotech
Alabama politicians like U.S. Sen. Katie Britt and Rep. Terri Sewell want funding from the Department of Commerce to help make Birmingham, Ala., a biotech hub. Investing in Birmingham will help “onshore key aspects of the supply chain,” they write in a Fortune commentary piece.
