The designer was very patient and she made sure I got the pricing that I needed and the time that I needed it done. I got a patio door and all the windows in the house. There are blackout shades and I got the remote on the ones in my front area. The installation was faster than I thought and the installer did a good job and he cleaned up behind himself. I was pleased. I love the quality of the blinds. I love the material, the thickness of it, and that you can't see out or in. Some of them have the string that you pull, which I like. It's easy to manage and they look great.

I called 3 Day Blinds in for an estimate, and they gave me a nice sales pitch, and I went for it. We purchased two large bedroom windows in the master bedroom and two large windows in our cafe kitchen window that looks out the front of the house. I was told that the following day, when my husband and I signed a contract and paid some money, somebody was coming out to measure again. When that person came, it sounded like he spent a good part of his life in installation of many different companies. He then made me feel better about the purchase because he was explaining that there's only one line that could be better than the one we had. He knew all the different companies. He does installation for many different blind companies. He made me feel a little bit better about our purchase.
I was surprised at the price, but they did tell me that a house appraiser would give them value because they were a high-end one. I had spoken with a Realtor who just got her whole entire house done. We paid over 3,000, she paid 6,000 and had every one of her windows done in her home. We have a rather large home, and we really only had the master and the cafe room in the front of the house. It seemed expensive. I wanted to get Costco out to get me an estimate, but the gentleman that came to do the measuring the following day from signing the contract seemed to know quite a bit.
We bought shutters. We're happy with them. They explained to us that it's pretty much a lifetime. If anything goes wrong with them, they'll be covered, and that somebody would come out. The thing I was disappointed in was we were given an estimate, and I realized it's an estimate of time. I pulled out the contract months later, and I looked at it, and we had already passed the date by about two weeks.
I called and said, "We need the window treatments up. When can they come?" I realized a lot of people do their whole homes instead of just two rooms like we did and I thought, "Are they holding us off because it's a smaller job and trying to piggyback us on some other installation day?" When I called, what was interesting was they came out within a week to 10 days, and we got the first morning appointment. It was rather quick, and it was very professionally installed.

3 Day Blinds' rep was very knowledgeable. He explained the pros and cons of various choices. So, he listened to what I needed and wanted and we got right down to it. And he responded in kind. He demonstrated with the UV level, how much it blocks. He had samples for me to look at. What colors I wanted. But that was the last part of it. The important part is what I wanted. I did like the colors of the product and what they had. It was appealing to me.
I went with a 99% UV blockage. And I ended up going with a dark gray, but it had little other colors in there. It was a textured. And it wasn't a light gray. I wanted more depth to it. Because when it comes down and it has all that light, I couldn't see what color it is anyway. And if it was a light gray, it would have not been noticeable. But I love that it retracted to the ceiling, which is what I was looking for. So, it had everything on my wish list.
The installers were adamant. They wanted to put the blinds in right. And they put it in one way. It didn't working because of the way the window frame stuck out from the wall. So, they were very good about putting additional spacers in behind the wall so that when the blind came down, it wouldn't hit the window. And they set it so that it would stop automatically in one location, which meets the top of the window. But I could always raise it up all the way so I could see the wall above the window. That blind could come down exactly to the window sill level, which is perfect because I don't need it to go to the floor. They were attentive to what I needed. I said, “It looks a little like it's off.” Sensor wasn't covering the window frame entirely. They fixed that. They were very good.
I love the blinds. It's very good quality. Works like a charm. I love that I could charge it once and it lasts two years depending on my usage. And very easy to charge, because there's a magnet up at the top so that, boom. Connects. I don't have to fiddle with getting it in like we do with a phone or any other USB device. It's fantastic. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Look into it because it's something you might wanna consider.

We had Rob from 3 Day Blinds come give us the price and a quote, which was a very nice number compared to what we had paid for two windows. We were putting them in two bedrooms. The blinds it elevated both of those bedrooms. And he said, “I love it so much.” And lo and behold, our one window treatment, one side, because we have a bay window, broke. I did it. It was an older window treatment that had been here when the house was purchased 18 years ago. And they were the pull-down blinds. It was the opaque. And they had the nylon strings inside. So, when I pulled it down, which might have been on the rough side as I've been told, it snapped. My husband said, “So, now we have to call them back again. I wanna have them done in these windows also.” So, the whole front of the house is complete with wood blinds going across.
The rep knew exactly what I was looking for. And I wanted to take what we were now getting in the faux wood for the two bedrooms compared to the real wood that we had in our primary bedroom. They're not sitting right next to each other, but I said I'd like to have continuity. That's what I'm looking for at this point in the house versus choppy, which it had been. So, he brought a sample up. We went with the snow white. They matched almost identical.
This is the second time that the installer has been to our home. We requested him. He had done the two bedrooms. He was a breeze. He was in and out in less than 40 minutes for the two bedrooms. One bedroom, we had already taken the blinds down. The second bedroom, he took the verticals down for us. He asked if he could get some spackle to fix the holes because the painter was coming in a week and a half. He was neat, wiped up after himself, in and out. And the same thing exactly today. Brought everything in, did what he needed to. He asked me to show him the extra room, because we had the half-bath in the den also done to replace out that window treatment, a bit on the dated side. It was also green. I didn't want green anymore.
The quality of the blinds compared to the wood is 80%. The solid wood is a little thicker. It has a nicer weight and feel to it. But if someone is looking at it directly and don't know it's not solid wood, he wouldn't know the difference. They gave us a better price because instead of by air delivery, we went by ground delivery. They were still in very quickly. So, we saved $300. Go with 3 Day Blinds.

We used 3 Day Blinds several years ago to get window coverings in a house that we had purchased and had a good experience. Then, we recently moved and we were given a referral to Budget Blinds from a neighbor. We called them and got an estimate for what we were looking for. Then we called 3 Day Blinds just knowing that they were a competitor and wanting to have more than one estimate. 3 Day Blinds ended up being a little bit more expensive than the other company but we chose to go with them because the salesperson who came here gave us some suggestion that was a little bit out of the box. It turned out that we liked it even though it didn't fit exactly what we said we were looking for. He read us a little bit and showed us something that we probably wouldn't have asked to see.
We live in an area that has extremely intense heat and we wanted good sun coverage or blockage in certain windows. So, we were looking for something that had a fairly high dense fabric that would give us a lot of sun coverage. You could get them in different colors and in different opaque thicknesses but they weren't necessarily all that gorgeous. The gentleman suggested fabric shades that gave a good amount of coverage from the sun but also had some texture and color to them. He showed us a couple of options with the samples and we decided to go in that direction.
The designer’s level of knowledge was very good. He seemed very experienced and confident and that transferred well to us. He was able to answer all of our questions and did that in a way that was better than the other company that we had an estimate from. There was a distinct difference between the salespeople. We had someone with the other company that was less experienced and didn't have a lot of answers, which made a difference too.
We had maybe 20 windows that were being installed. The installers came right when they said they were and were very personable. They explained how they were going to go about it. There was one gentleman and he was training somebody else so, they were working in tandem. He explained where he was starting and how he was going to go through it. And they got it done very quickly. The installation was quite easy and then, they showed us how to operate them and what to do. So that was good too.
I'm very pleased with the quality of the shade as well as the aesthetic look of it. Initially, I thought it was installed backward because the 3 Day Blinds label, which should have been on the back side of the shade, was showing on the front side. This is in a room that we don't frequent necessarily all the time so it caught my eye. The roller shade was installed appropriately but it was manufactured incorrectly. It was rolled on the roller wrong. So at the bottom of the shade, there is the thing that you can pull down on, and then there's a plastic pull in the middle so that you don't get fingerprints on the fabric. The flip side of that is a plastic, hard plastic piece that has the 3 Day Blinds label on it, which is usually up against the window. So you would see that side of it from outside of the house as opposed to inside of the house. But it wasn't a big deal.
I called the installer first and I asked if it was possible that they installed the shades wrong. The guy said that from what I was describing, it sounded like it was incorrectly made. So he said they would have to order another one. And they did. It has been a little bit disappointing but that didn't bother me. It was some mistake that was made and they were rectifying it easily. We got an email from 3 Day Blinds a couple of weeks later saying that the fabric was backordered, and it could be up to December 31st, 2024 before we would have the replacement. So, I called this woman who had sent the email and I asked if she mistyped the date and she said no. They don't know exactly when the fabric will be available and they like to push it very far out.
I said the shade is made fine. It's just improperly rolled on the roller. I asked if it could be deconstructed and then reconstructed rather than having to wait potentially a year and a half to get a replacement. And she said no but there's always a chance that the fabric will come in sooner. Yesterday, I got a text from the installer saying they can come and install our replacement shade on August 1st. I'm very satisfied but some of the communication and getting the replacement wasn't as easy or as thorough as I was used to with the rest of the process. I was given information that we might have to wait a year and a half and then, it's here. That's to my benefit but that could be improved. I would recommend 3 Day Blinds. There's a good selection, the prices are competitive and the quality is good. All in all, I'm very happy with what we got.

Someone came out to the house to show me their product line. They were totally professional. No pressure of any kind and gave me a lot of options. What I thought I wanted was not what I eventually bought from 3 Day Blinds. When I looked at options, I decided to go with shades instead because I like them better. They gave me more light. They slide up into a little balance so that they're out of the way if I wanna pull them all the way up. There's great ease of operating them with a little slide on the side that I simply pull them, can position them any way I want them. One of them in particular, I used to go up and down because I have a computer that I use at my table in the kitchen. This is able to block the sun while I'm working at my computer.
The install date was only a few days after I ordered. They notified me that they would be coming out on a certain day. They showed up early in the day. There was an older gentleman who seemed to be the more senior person. He seemed to have an apprentice working with him, but the apprentice was very knowledgeable as well. He was a young man. They worked in concert with one another so well, one knowing exactly what the next step was going to be in providing the tool and the parts. It was so clean. They came in with the shades in different boxes. They took each box and set the equipment aside for each window. It was three windows.
It was in a very awkward position over my kitchen sink because there were not a lot of areas where you can put your knees down and get leverage. But the two gentlemen did a fabulous job. They were polite. They cleaned up after themselves too. It was spotless when they left. It was completely efficient from start to finish. Everything about it was a really positive experience.

The salesman spent a lot of time with me and my husband. He was very knowledgeable about the product and understood what I was looking for. He was very good at what he did, and when the install guy came in, he knew what he was doing. He did the install beautifully, cleaned and took the garbage with him. I did white blinds throughout the house and different types of tapes. The blinds are faux wood, and the quality is very nice. There are 13 of them, and they look great. I have gotten compliments from people coming in. I would recommend 3 Day Blinds without a doubt.

The rep was quick to come out to look at the house and give us suggestions. But the plantation shutters, which were what we ordered, took very long to come in. The company is called 3 Day Blinds and it took four months. But we're happy with the product. The quality is great. Everyone we dealt with was very nice and helpful, and it was seamless.

The rep was put off by the fact that we were plain vanilla and didn't have a lot of desire to change colors in every room and which side were the strings. But she was very nice. The installation was fast. The quality seems very nice. But I'm concerned with the mechanism for raising and lowering. Some of them gets down easily and some of them are tighter. But as long as they hang in there, I'll be fine. They do what we want them to do. They've raised the temperature in the house when we drop them. They're very effective.

I didn't realize that they didn't have a store. But when I called, I liked their terms and they came out. I got two of the white fold-up shade. The designer was very good. She showed me the different options, the different kinds of material, and she measured accurately. I'm happy with my purchase. The installation guy was good and polite. He came and did it in no time at all. He installed them correctly.

The young men who installed the blinds were helpful and very patient in showing me how to set up the method of using my phone. Even though I said it was not necessary, they said, "Oh, you should do it. Come on, we'll show you how." I was laughing and said, "Trust me, if I'm gonna go somewhere, I'm gonna just close the blinds. I won't need to do it from far away." They stuck to it until they could hook it up to my WiFi and showed me how to do it on the phone.
Before they did that, it was a rainy and miserable day when they got here. They took the old blinds down, took away all the mess, and put up the new ones. One gentleman was not very tall and he had to climb up on my kitchen counter to put the big one up over the sink. The other gentleman was up over the door in the entrance way and he had to climb up on a big ladder to get up there, then the very tall gentleman arrived and gave him a hand.
The young men did four windows, so it was four separate blinds, and they did an excellent job. Compared to the ones that are in the other rooms, they are far superior. I'd tell people to go for 3 Day Blinds. We also got blinds from Blinds To Go, and they were a disaster. It never worked right. After we pulled them up, it would take 15 attempts to get them to come down.

They've grown to offer a wide variety of blinds, shades, shutters, and drapes in a range of patterns, colors, and sizes, but the company is still proudly manufacturing most of their own products within 3 business days.

There are quite a few subcategories of every type of blind at 3 Day Blinds. For example, if you want shades you can browse cellular shades, roller shades, soft Roman shades, horizontal sheer shades, woven wood shades, or simply sheer shades. You'll be able to see all the swatch options available for the type of blinds you're interested in and see the different operating system options. We are impressed with how many choices there are and have no doubt that customers will find at least a few that would look great in their house. Despite the fact that we really wish they gave some sort of pricing on their website, it seems like people are thrilled with the design advice they receive, quality of blinds, quick installation, and overall functionality of their blinds. The installer was polite
The installer was polite, kind, professional & a perfectionest. When I was coming into the house with a heavy package, he was on his way out to get something from his truck. He stopped, took the package from me & carried it in. As a 76 year old woman, I appreciated it. He did a fantastic job on installing the blinds. They look incredible. He cleaned up after he was finished, but he was so organized, their was really no mess, just empty boxes, which were removed from my home immediately after he finished.

The installation was done improper on Saturday .The blind is stuck in the down position and we have not been able to use the door since then; and “customer service” tells us we have to wait a few days to get this repaired /replaced. Meanwhile, I hired painters to paint this room , they are here now, and they are unable to paint because of the improper installation.The “Customer Service Dept” gives lack luster customer service !

We'd moved home after renovations and needed window treatments ASAP, heat from the sun during the day and light from the airport at night. Our concierge (my word) was simply a delight we had some ideas of what we wanted and he made it very easy to translate that into what would be become our blinds. He kept things moving along and we never felt like we were waiting, we always had something to do. He also offered a few suggestions that we're now glad we accepted. The install was a similar experience, we left him to his work and the blinds went up quickly without any fuss. He took the time to explain everything about operating the blinds, especially our one motorized blind. He noticed a defect on one blind and put in for a replacement. Honestly if he hadn't pointed it out and already started the process I would have told him not to bother as I thought it was very minor and that I could patch it, but 3 Day's standards are higher than mine. The install of our replacement went just as smoothly. At first I was irked that my wife wanted blinds, but now that I have the motorized blind behind the couch in our living room, I am very happy with not having to deal with opening and closing a curtain behind a couch. The clean simple look in the other rooms is very nice as well. 3 Day's employees are very professional, easy to work with, and have wonderfully positive attitudes.

All the other 1 star (which should be 0) reviews are representative of 3-Day Blinds' reputation. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY - EVER! Expensive products and horrible Customer Service!!! I ordered a blind to replace an older blind that had failed. Simple enough. I gave the designer the exact measurements and she came out to the house to confirm the measurements (she actually was a manager at Next Day Blinds where I had purchased the original blind - small world). The designer also used my old broken blind as a guide as to what I wanted. Once ordered, it took about 3 weeks to arrive (so I'm not sure how accurate "3 day blinds" is...) but it wasn't the end of the world. The blind that arrived was an outside mount and 3 inches wider than I had ordered (I needed an inside mount). Given the profile of my window's trim, an outside mount would not work which is why I needed an inside mount. Mistakes happen and this should be a simple fix...or so I thought. I have now spent 3 months (!!!!) trying to get a correct replacement blind that fits my window and have been given the run around still with no resolution. One almost $500 blind that doesn't fit, 3 months of effort and still no solution. Do not buy anything from this Company. There are plenty of blind companies out there...go with someone else! This should have been a simple resolution something to the effect of "Sorry Sir. We will get the correct size, remake the blind and ship it right out to you." Premium price and that's it...

Problems with 3 Day Blinds If you're considering buying blinds from this company, we recommend that you look elsewhere. We just bought a new home without any window coverings, so we ordered more than a dozen miniblinds and shades from this organization. The quality of the product that they've delivered so far is definitely not up to par with what we've received from Next Day Blinds in the past, but the real frustration we've had has been with fulfillment of our order. 3 Day Blinds seems to be plagued with supply chain problems and they've repeatedly called us at the last minute to say that we should expect further delays. When we tried to inquire about the component that was unavailable so we could adjust our order, we got different stories from their customer support department and the design consultant we worked with and ultimately never got a straight answer from anyone over there. We needed everything installed before our move date so we would have window coverings, so we opted to pay an extra $700 to expedite delivery within 3 weeks. We appreciate that they agreed to do a partial delivery, but they clearly only did that because we were calling and emailing them repeatedly expressing our frustration. To date, we are being told that our full order will not be delivered until late January (long after our move in date and more than 3 months after our order date). We tried to negotiate getting our $700 premium back, but they were unwilling to do that. So bottom line: their product and delivery claims are NOT worth the price that they're charging. We recommend they change their name to "3 Month Blinds" and strongly advise anyone who considers using them to look somewhere else.
I had Michelle come to my house a few days ago. She came too early and hesitated to wipe her feet at my door. She was very curt, she complained about my internet, she would not sit on my couch. She was incredibly rude and impatient. When I went through and thanked her for her time and I had narrowed down what I wanted, she said ok let's order. I said I never order right away, I get information, estimates then decide. She pressured, "well, 80% of the people I visit order right away." I responded, "Well, that's their problem.". She became very short when I did not place an order and insisted on calling me to follow up in 3 days. Will never use this company again.

This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. As I'm writing this review, I am sitting on hold waiting to speak to someone. I have been on hold for over 30 minutes. I'm sure they won't pick up because I have a complaint. We ordered our blinds in August. They were just installed today... 5 months later. There was zero communication during the 5 months from 3 day blinds. I had to be the one to call and sit on hold. I have been in contact with Michelle, the sales rep, who couldn't care less. She called me all the time before the order was actually placed but once placed, I never heard from her again. I reached out to her several times for help getting through to someone. She said she would help get us a partial refund for the long wait and poor communication. That NEVER happened. Horrible company. DO NOT USE!!!!

I'm extremely dissatisfied with 3 day blinds. I got new blinds installed a little over two years ago and I've had several issues with blinds. One time three of seven blinds I got installed the string holding the blinds together completely came apart. It took them over two month to repair it. Now my blind will not open. My experience with 3 day blinds has been awful. I will never do busy with them again.

Misrepresented the value of their shutters . I can't get it in 3 days because it's shutters so 3 day guarantee doesn't apply here because the Chinese factory with child labor is backed logged with orders. So perhaps the name should be changed to 3 month blinds? The price they quoted me wasn't competitive at all and it turns out I wasn't getting wood shutters . The other quote was for a composite material ( plastic and wood dust is what I am guessing) and read it could give off toxic gas as the sun heats up the product after being installed . Do the real wood shutters would cost me $300 more per window.

I had blinds installed about a month ago. They are not right and I can't get anyone to call me back. They sag either in the ends or in the middle. and they are frayed on the edges. I'm so disappointed and the were so pricey

Sylvia arrived to give me an estimate for shutters in a powder room. She had brackets and examples to show me exactly how the shutters would need to be mounted. After an extremely knowledgable discussion of options, we both agreed that shutters would not work on the window. I appreciated her expertise, honesty and warm demeanor. I have her card and will use her for other projects in the future.

Very expensive thought we would just go over budget for quality and painless installation. I gave two stars the staff was nice and the blind look good but mechanically don't work well. We also had the worst installation every blind was crooked. (Not kidding anywhere from a 1/2" to 2" the blind on the door was hung too close to the trim and you can't open and close.

With Five Blind Dates, Shuang Hu decided to make a rom-com about filial piety, friendship and a tea shop
Five Blind Dates begins with a PowerPoint-style presentation of polaroid images surrounded by tea leaves. It's our introduction to our protagonist, Lia Ling, her grandmother Popo, and her ex-best friend/"first let-down", Richard.
"This is a story about me, Lia! And, well, tea! Oh, no, not that kind," Lia narrates, frowning as an image of bubble tea swims into focus. Because Lia hates bubble tea.
Growing up in Townsville as a first-generation Chinese Australian, we're told Lia (played by Shuang Hu, who also co-wrote and produced the movie) and Richard (Yoson An) would listen to Popo talk about tea for hours.
When Popo died, she left Lia enough money to start her own tea shop, which Lia named in her honour.
Fifty-five seconds later, Lia's backstory is complete and we are thrown into her present-day Sydney teashop, where it becomes immediately apparent Lia is in a pretty bad place.
Popo's Tea Time is failing. The few potential customers who do walk through the door all seem to want bubble tea (which originated in Taiwan) and couldn't care less about the authentic handcrafted Chinese tea experiences Lia wants to share with the world.
But Lia is too proud to tell anyone or ask for help. She's exhausted, she feels like she's letting everyone down, her mummy issues keep surfacing and she frets she'll end up an "unloved crone".
At the same time, her sister Alice (Tiffany Wong) is getting married to the man of her dreams.
Then a fortune teller tells Lia she'll find her soulmate and her business will succeed if she goes on five blind dates before her sister's wedding
That's the hook for director Shawn Seet's Five Blind Dates, the first Amazon Original movie to be produced in Australia.
The five blind dates idea came from Hu's co-writer, Nathan Ramos-Park: "Before we met, I was randomly shopping around a reality show called Five Blind Dates where five people from your life get to choose a person that they think could be your soulmate," he said in a statement from Amazon.
Each member of Lia's family takes great delight in picking a blind date for her, with Lia's best friend Mason (played by Ilai Swindells of Retrograde and Bay of Fires) helping out too.
While we're on Mason: Swindells's character is unfortunately an exercise in the GBF stereotype , always at his friend's beck and call, with a penchant for calling people "boo", and apparently endless spare time for a makeover montage. That makeover sees Lia "transformed" from the beautiful tea shop owner with her hair in a pony to the beautiful tea shop owner in a red dress and lipstick with her hair down.
Anyway. There are life lessons to be gleaned from each of the five dates Lia begrudgingly embarks on
The first, set up by Lia's dad (played by the legendary Tzi Ma, who has starred in so many hits including The Farewell and Rush Hour), teaches Lia that what our parents think will be good for us might not be what we actually need.
"[Lia's] dad thinks money is important, because money comes with power … so he [sets her up with billionaire heir Apollo] because he thinks money is going to make her happy," Hu says.
"Lia learns through that that love is important to her even though money is nice."
Lia's second date, set up by her mum (Renee Lim: The Dry; Bali 2002; The Tourist), bombs because he turns out to be in love with redacted .
"[Ezra] helps [Lia] ask herself: What do I want? What makes me happy?"
Lia's third date, Curtis, sent by sister Alice, helps her "overcome her fears and become more empowered".
Then, just three dates in, Lia's life implodes and she's forced to reconsider her approach to everything
"[Lia realises] she doesn't need to feel pressured or held down by the expectations other people have of her. And [she realises] some of these expectations aren't even real — they're just figments of her imagination," Hu says.
"As soon as she lets go of these expectations [and] decides to do things the way she wants to, that leads her back to [the right person]."
The movie leaves you thinking about how the pursuit of happiness in life is a glorious, vital thing, about the beauty of cultural traditions, and about how important it is to show up to our family and friends as we truly are.
But something happens at the end of the film that will also leave you frowning at the apparent message that it's OK to completely compromise your dreams and values to make $$$.
And Lia's 180 isn't the only incongruous aspect of Five Blind Dates
This movie is billed as a rom-com, but feels desperately lacking when it comes to the "butterflies" feeling audiences may expect.
Swaths of it are poorly written, and the dialogue is often stilted, in the unique way of Australian productions. At times scenes feel rushed and mish-mashed together.
And it's clear from the outset who Lia will end up with, and what she will have to do to get there.
This is because Five Blind Dates is a Hallmark movie — the sort you watch when you're feeling bored and lonely over the holidays. (Which may have something to do with why Prime Video released it 24 hours ahead of Valentine's Day.)
This isn't a bad thing. Hallmark movies are a beautiful time when you're in the right mood. And they have a mass following for a reason.
They exist to provide an easy, feel-good, butterfly-inducing time. Which Five Blind Dates definitely tries to achieve.
There are a handful of comedic moments along the way. See: Mason's declaration: "I don't kink-shame but … straight people are wild" (Where's the lie?); Lia's dad unwittingly trying to set her up for a life as a billionaire businessman's beard; Lia's mum boasting openly about her new boyfriend's cunnilingus capabilities. And Lia's attempt at surreptitiously thirsting over Richard's six-pack being interrupted as he demands to know: "Are you staring at my body?"
The on- and off-screen diversity of Five Blind Dates is a feat
As is the fact a rom-com created and penned by two Asian writers was chosen as Amazon's first Australian original film.
And the fact that so many talented Asian actors from myriad backgrounds could come together to tell such a uniquely Chinese Australian story is a beautiful thing, regardless of any critiques of the finished product.
It's the cultural elements of the story that shine brightest in Five Blind Dates, from the depiction of the traditional Chinese tea ceremony, to Lia's memories of Popo.
"We wanted to create a story that hadn't been seen before in Australia," Hu says.
That's why she and Ramos-Park went to such lengths to look at themes beyond romance (and perhaps why it feels light on the rom of the rom-com side of things).
"We tried to incorporate themes [from] filial piety and some of the responsibilities we feel towards our families in this modern era of trying to make a career and chase our dreams, but also feeling the responsibility of getting married and having kids [and] for families to be really involved in that, and I wanted to showcase the Asian Australian experience on the movie screen," she says.
The desire to bring tea into it came from Hu, who had an online tea store in another life.
"I think most of Western culture only thinks of tea in the form of tea bags in hot water, but it runs much deeper," she explains.
"Tea is such an important aspect of Chinese culture. It originated in China and, for us, it's a way of socialising and also greeting people.
"When you go to someone's house, you offer them tea and the act of making the tea and pouring it for them, and the energy that is transferred is a really nice way we bond. [But] the whole tea ceremony is something that's not really publicised or understood in Australian culture.
"I wanted the world to know more about tea and the ceremony that comes with it and what it means."
