On success, directly kills living targets, even if they are protected by a high-level Resistance effect or by a totem of undying , and issues the appropriate death message . Players and mobs killed this way drop loot , and slimes and magma cubes that are not of minimum size spawn smaller ones. Destroys boats , minecarts , loose items , paintings , armor stands , and experience orbs if they are targeted.

In Bedrock Edition , players in Creative mode cannot be killed.

How to Make Potions in Minecraft

This wikiHow teaches you how to brew potions in Minecraft. Potions can increase your strength, restore health, or even harm enemies depending on their ingredients.

Gathering Your Supplies

Step 1 Travel to the...

  • The Nether is incredibly dangerous, especially for new players. Consider setting the game difficulty to "Peaceful" while in the Nether to avoid dying until you want Ghast tears, Magma cream, Blaze rods and Blaze Powder.

Step 2 Gather Nether ingredients.

  • Nether Wart: A mushroom-like item found on the ground in Nether fortresses. It grows on soul sand. (Can be found in Nether Fortress or Bastion Remnant as of 1.16)
  • Blaze Rods: Blazes drop blaze rods when killed. You will need to bump the difficulty up to 'Easy' for Blazes to spawn.(Save some for crafting some Eyes of Ender later on)
  • Soul Sand: If you wish to grow more Nether Wart in the Overworld, you can grab some of these brown blocks that look like they have faces trapped inside. (Not to be confused with Soul soil.)

Step 3 Return to the overworld.

  • In Minecraft PE (Pocket Edition), just tap the brewing stand icon and then tap 1 x to create the brewing stand.
  • On the console version of Minecraft, select the brewing stand and press A on the Xbox or X on the PlayStation).

Step 5 Craft glass bottles.

  • In Minecraft PE, just tap the glass bottle icon and tap 3 x .
  • On the console version of Minecraft, select the glass bottle icon and press A on the Xbox or X on the PlayStation. (To get glass bottles; you can craft it from 3 glass (smelt 3 sands in a furnace), you can get it from fishing or even from killing a witch or looting)

Step 6 Create blaze powder.

  • In Minecraft PE, tap the blaze powder icon, then tap 2 x .
  • On the console version, select the blaze powder icon and press A on the Xbox or X on the PlayStation.

Step 7 Find secondary ingredients.

  • Spider Eye - Dropped by Spiders, Cave Spiders, and Witches. Used for poison potions.
  • Glistering Melon - You can craft a glistening melon by surrounding a Melon with eight Gold Nuggets in the Crafting Grid. Used for instant health potions.
  • Golden Carrot - Can be crafted by surrounding a single Carrot with eight Gold Nuggets in the Crafting Grid. Used for night-vision potions.
  • Blaze Powder - Can be crafted by crafting a single Blaze Rod, dropped by Blaze enemies. This will produce two Blaze Powders. Used for strength potions.
  • Fermented Spider Eye - Can be crafted from a Spider Eye, Mushroom, and Sugar. Used for weakness potions.
  • Pufferfish - Can be caught by fishing or (As of Update Aquatic) in a Water Bucket. Used for water-breathing potions.
  • Magma Cream - Dropped by defeated Magma Cubes, or can be crafted by combining Blaze Powder (Crafted from Blaze rods) and a Slimeball (Dropped by Slime). Used for fire resistance potions.
  • Sugar - This can be crafted from single pieces of Sugar Cane. Used for speed potions.
  • Ghast Tear - Dropped by Ghasts. (Can be difficult to obtain since Ghasts tend to hover over lava). Used for health regeneration potions.
  • Rabbit's Foot - Dropped by defeating Rabbits (2.5% drop rate). Used for leaping potions.
  • Phantom Membrane - Dropped by phantoms. Used in potions of slow falling.
  • Turtle Shell - Crafted by placing 5 turtle scutes in a helmet formation in a crafting table. Scutes are obtained by first breeding turtles, waiting for the eggs to hatch and the babies to grow into adults, then killing the resulting adult turtles. Used in potions of the turtle master.

Step 8 Collect potion modifiers.

  • Redstone - You can find Redstone by mining Redstone Ore. This will typically yield 4-5 Redstone. This can make potions last longer.
  • Glowstone Dust - Can be obtained by breaking a block of Glowstone. You can receive up to four Glowstone Dusts per block of Glowstone. This can make potions stronger, but shorter.
  • Gunpowder - This can be found by defeating Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches. This makes potions throwable.
  • Fermented Spider Eye - This secondary ingredient can also be used to further modify potions. It typically reverses or corrupts the effects of the potion. (Crafted from a Spider eye and brown mushroom)
  • Dragon's Breath - Can be obtained by using an empty glass bottle on the Ender Dragon's purple breath attack. This makes potions linger on the ground.

Step 9 Fill your glass bottles.

Brewing Potions

Step 1 Open your brewing stand (Crafted from a blaze rod and 3 cobblestone).

  • In Minecraft PE, tap a square, then tap the water bottle icon on the left side of the page.
  • On the console version, press Y or triangle with the water bottle selected.

Step 3 Add a Nether wart.

  • Skip this step in Minecraft PE.
  • On the console version, just press Y or triangle with the blaze powder selected.

Step 5 Place the Awkward Potion(s) back in the brewing stand.

  • Your blaze powder from the first round should be good for 20 brew cycles.

Step 7 Place the potion in your inventory.

How to craft this Potion in Survival Mode

1. open the brewing stand menu.

First, open your brewing stand so that you have the Brewing Stand menu that looks like this:

2. Add Blaze Powder to Activate the Brewing Stand

Start by adding blaze powder in the far left box to activate the brewing stand.

3. Add Items to make this Potion

In the Brewing Stand menu, you place ingredients in the top box and the potions are created in the bottom three boxes.

To make a Potion of Harming (Instant Damage), you will need 1 Potion of Poison (0:45) and 1 fermented spider eye .

Place the Potion of Poison (0:45) in one of the bottom boxes in the Brewing Stand menu. Then add the fermented spider eye to the top box.

Crafting recipe for potion of harming

Once the brewing process is complete, you will hear a " glug glug glug " sound and the fermented spider eye will disappear. The Potion of Harming (Instant Damage) will now be finished.

Your bottle will now contain a Potion of Harming (Instant Damage).

If you drink the Potion of Harming (Instant Damage), it will instantly cause you 6 points of damage.

You probably don't want to cause yourself 6 points of damage. So, try turning the Potion of Harming (Instant Damage) into a Splash Potion of Harming (Instant Damage) to throw at another mob. This will cause damage to another mob.

This week we’re talking about mob effects, squashing bugs, and drinking from bottles very clearly labelled “ominous”! Ominous trials and ominous events are now part of a larger system of opt-in challenges that also includes the village raids you know and fear. Get an ominous bottle from a trial chamber vault or a raid captain and drink it to gain the Bad Omen effect. Then, head to a village to start a raid, or enter a trial chamber to begin an ominous trials! Ominous trials involve fighting tougher mobs, and dodging potions and projectiles spewing out of ominous trial spawners. Triumph over all of that and you’ll be able to unlock rarer rewards using your ominous trial key!  Wait…  so is the moral of this story that drinking from bottles labelled “ominous” is good? That can’t be right, can it? Anyway! Experimental Features

Ominous trials.

  • A new Ominous Event that can be accessed by exploring a Trial Chamber with Bad Omen
  • This event will have players facing more powerful Trial Spawners, if they dare!
  • Please note: There are some changes that are already in the Java Edition Snapshot that haven’t made it here, but we are working on more tweaks that will be included in the upcoming Previews.

Ominous Bottle

  • Comes in 5 variations, one for each Bad Omen level
  • The bottle breaks when consumed
  • Can be stacked to 64
  • Can be found uncommonly in any Vaults that are unlocked with Trial Keys, and is dropped by Raid Captains when defeated outside a Raid

Ominous Trial Key

  • A new variant of the Trial Key which can only be obtained by defeating an Ominous Trial Spawner
  • They can be used to unlock Ominous Vaults

Ominous Trial Spawner

  • Provides a more challenging experience that players can opt into for better rewards
  • It is not in cooldown
  • Making it Ominous this way will bypass the cooldown
  • Glow blue instead of orange
  • Emit soul flames instead of normal flames
  • The equipment these mobs wear have Armor Trims applied from the Trial Chambers
  • Periodically spawn potions and projectiles on top of unsuspecting players and mobs
  • It will stay Ominous until it has been defeated and its cooldown has finished
  • When defeated, it will eject a different set of loot than normal Trial Spawners

Ominous Vault

  • A variant of Vaults that have a different texture and emit soul flames instead of normal flames
  • These Vaults hold a more valuable set of rewards than the standard Vaults unlocked by Trial Keys
  • Known Issue: Vaults in Trial Chambers may generate without loot and cannot be opened by Trial Key

Ominous Events

  • Bad Omen has been expanded to give access to an optional experience in Trial Chambers
  • They are more challenging than usual, and are designed to shake up the experience in unique ways
  • Illager Raids are an example of an existing Ominous Event
  • It has a new, shadowy icon and a sound for being applied to the player
  • Instead, players can gain access to Bad Omen by consuming a new Ominous Bottle
  • This occurs when the player is within detection range of a Trial Spawner that is not Ominous
  • The transformed Trial Omen has a duration of 15 minutes multiplied by the previous Bad Omen level
  • Players that have Trial Omen are surrounded by ominous particles

Mob Effects

  • Affected entities will emit a wind burst upon death
  • Brewed with an Awkward Potion and a Breeze Rod
  • Affected entities will spread Cobweb blocks upon death
  • Non-player entities with this effect can walk through Cobweb at normal speeds
  • Brewed with an Awkward Potion and a Cobweb block
  • Affected entities will spawn two Slimes upon death
  • Brewed with an Awkward Potion and a Slime Block
  • Affected entities have a 5% chance to spawn 1-2 Silverfish when hurt
  • Brewed with an Awkward Potion and a Stone block
  • Spawners in an area will select a unique effect for the duration of their challenge, and drop them as lingering potions onto mobs and players nearby
  • Slimes are immune to Oozing
  • Silverfish are immune to Infested
  • Known issue: The duration of these mob effects is different to Java Edition and will be fixed soon
  • The Breeze no longer Long Jumps into lava ( MCPE-177037 ) 
  • Breeze now properly deflects most projectiles (except fireworks and fishing rod lures) ( MCPE-178900 )
  • The Breeze now plays all of its sounds properly, even when off-screen ( MCPE-178507 ) 

Trial Chambers

  • Trial Chambers now generate slightly more rarely and a bit more spaced out from each other 

Trial Spawner

  • Trial Spawner activates only if it is in the line of sight of a player
  • Ominous Trial Spawners in the same room are more likely to spawn the same selection of projectiles 
  • Becoming Ominous will despawn any existing mobs it spawned and reset its challenge
  • That equipment will have Armor Trims from the Trial Chambers
  • The Heavy Core can now be waterlogged
  • The Heavy Core doesn't pop as an item when Lava or Water flows across it
  • The Heavy Core can now be pushed and pulled by Pistons without breaking ( MCPE-179910 ) ( MCPE-179911 )
  • The Heavy Core now has a map color of METAL
  • The Heavy Core now has pickaxe as its preferred tool, and its destroy times have been adjusted 
  • Added unique sounds for Cobwebs ( MCPE-180109 )

Wind Charge

  • Wind Charges no longer collide with nor destroy End Crystals ( MCPE-179304 )
  • Wind Charges also no longer collide with other Wind Charges ( MCPE-179193 )

Hardcore Mode

  • The toggle for this feature can be found and enabled in the 'create new world' screen in the latest Preview
  • Added the Hardcore mode in-game HUD UI
  • The gameplay for this feature is still in development, so expect a few issues while it's in Preview
  • Hardcore mode worlds can be uploaded to Realms
  • Out of game menu screens currently do not display when a Hardcore mode world is loaded on a Realm

Getting to the new Profile Screen:

  • Open the Friends Drawer and click on your friends to see their profiles, or click “Search for Players” from the Friends Drawer to find new profiles.
  • In the old UI, click “Add Friends” from the Friends tab and search for friends. Click on them to view their profiles.

  • Cauldrons filled with potions now keep the color of the potion when pushed by a Piston 
  • Containers being cloned over no longer keep their container screens open and cause crashes 
  • The "tallgrass" block is now split into unique instances "short_grass" and "fern"
  • Items drops from blocks destroyed in an explosion now get merged into bigger item stacks before spawning in the world 
  • All blocks now drop items by default when exploded with TNT ( MCPE-56036 )
  • The rule can be set to "true" to re-enable the previous behavior where not all blocks would drop when exploded by TNT
  • Player can now stand on Boats that float on water ( MCPE-105535 ) ( MCPE-120687 ) 

Updated Edit World Screen

  • Export World or Export as Template if clear player data is set it will be applied in a copy and then exported (Preview Only) 
  • The Game Tip for sneaking now resolves itself properly when the player sneaks

Gamepad Button Tooltips

  • "Draw" and "Release" tooltips now appear for Crossbows ( MCPE-44845 )
  • "Read Book" tooltip now appears when it's possible to read a Book from a Lectern even when you are not holding an item ( MCPE-44848 ) 
  • "Place" tooltip now appears for doors ( MCPE-157688 ) 
  • Fixed an issue where the ‘Let It Go’ trophy did not unlock on PlayStation®4 
  • When using an item on an entity, it is now necessary to release the use button before being able to use it again, which prevents players from inadvertently consuming items themselves when interacting with entities
  • Sprinting speed is no longer activated with a delay ( MCPE-178858 )
  • Ensure the right controller gets assigned to player 1 when playing on Xbox ( MCPE-163023 ) 


  • Fixed an issue that could cause the loading screen to get stuck for some time at 41% ( MCPE-175550 )
  • Naturally spawning mobs now spawn at the center of a Block ( MCPE-99315 ) In this beta we updated natural mob spawns to have mobs spawn at the center of a block instead of at the corner of a block. This fixes many issues where mobs could not spawn on slopes, in narrow passageways and in other situations where they were expected to. For technical players, this bug fix will mean that some player-made mob farms no longer fully work. We appreciate the time the community puts into building clever farms and we try to avoid breaking farms when we can. In this case, we felt that this change was necessary because it improves the way spawning works in many biomes.
  • Fixed crashes that could occur when creating worlds on new Realms and backing out at the Online Safety dialog box
  • Updated the 'Are you sure you want to opt out?' Realms Stories modal to ensure players know they can opt in later (Preview Only) 
  • Fixed inconsistent displaying of unread badges for new posts in the Story Feed tab (Preview Only) 
  • In Realms, blocks no longer reappear after breaking them in Creative Mode with Delayed Block Breaking toggle turned off ( REALMS-11707 ) 
  • The Realms Stories New Post screen now enumerates its active buttons with text-to-speech on (Preview Only)

  • Support prevention of app/flow restart when dark mode toggled on or off on across Android devices.

  • Fixed a bug where GUI scale was not modifiable after changing between handheld and docked mode on Switch consoles ( MCPE-159959 )
