My village exists in a low lying area that has a warm summer and a chilly winter. Mostly I visit my village in summers because of the holidays. In origin, I’m from Bangladesh. But after the partition, my family came and settled in a remote village in Murshidabad. Presently, I stay in Kolkata with my parents, but several times I have heard my father remember his childhood days in the village.

During the vacations, I often visit the village. People are so innocent there and all of them love us so much. They care for their nature and do not harm it like the urban people. Also, they have still kept their tribal festivals intact. I love to enjoy their traditional food and this bonding between my people in the village. Since my childhood days, I used to fantasize about spending my life in our ancestral village. Staying in a village has never been an opportunity for me because I am born and brought up in the city. We hardly get a chance to meet my ancestral people in the village of Murshidabad. The story goes back to the partition of India when my great grandparents migrated from Bangladesh and settled in Murshidabad to protect their families. At that time they were extremely poor and had a humble income to spend their days. They were followed by many others.

The village is now much more developed than it was when first inhabited. When I visit the village with my parents, during the vacation, it gets quite enjoyable to meet them after a long time. The clean air and water are beautiful with pure fruits and vegetables to eat. The reads are of red soil and soft to walk over. The humble neighbour of that village is the main reason I love my village. 

Some of our relatives still live in the village. Their primary profession is agriculture. During my visit, my cousins took me to show the agricultural fields. It was totally a mesmerizing experience. The entire horizon was green and such a peaceful life that I could never experience in the city.

Life in a village is much different from what we experience in the city. The urban lifestyle does not provide us with all views of the Earth. The world has much more greenery and beauty than it seems to us. The city definitely gives a modern life, better infrastructure, more communication, and quick connections. But it also takes away the natural goodness from us.

I find myself extremely lucky to think that I am from a village. I stay in a distant village in the suburbs of Darjeeling. The best part of living in a village is that I can stay far away from the daily crowd of the city. The city is too confusing and suffocating for me. I cannot bear staying there even for a week. I always crave the peace I get in my own village. The village called Kasaimara is extremely beautiful in its flora and fauna. The air is clean and pure like the innocent people of my village.

We do not have many modern amenities like the city. We often face problems with network and communication, we do not have good schools or hospitals. But still, the peace of nature allows us to live a long and healthy life. I love to take long walks up the hill slopes in the morning or often cycle all the way. It saves the cost of taking any gym practice and is also helpful in maintaining a healthy body and peaceful mind. 

Due to no pollution, we always have a majestic view of the mountains from our village. Around 50-50 families live in our village. For weekend and holiday picnics, all our villagers come together and celebrate with our ethnic music and dance. It is not like the mechanical life of the city. Everything we do here has a spontaneous charm and is full of life.

The environment of my village is so beautiful. The people work hard to preserve ethnic integrity. We have a rich history o folktales and myths. As a child, I often heard my grandparents tell me stories about them. They are precious and innocent like the people. They easily befriend other members, even from a different community. My village celebrates our own tribal festivals with great enjoyment and pomp. I am extremely lucky that I am a proud villager of India. We do not have many facilities, but at the end of the day, we are at peace with ourselves and others.

I visit my village once a year during my Dussehra vacation. I go there with my parents during this time to our ancestral house where Durga Puja takes place every year. 

As the car turns to take the muddy road, I can feel the freshness in the air. The road that leads to the village has big trees on either side and they are so full of life as if they are dancing with joy to welcome us to their village. I have never seen such a breathtaking scene. There is a temple at the entrance of the village where often prayers, rituals, and other worshipping activities are taking place.. There is a big pond near the temple and is surrounded by mango trees, champak trees, and a big peepal tree. The smell of the flowers and mango buds attracts everyone’s attention. My ancestral home is behind the peepal tree. 

There is a primary school in my village where the village kids study with a lot of enthusiasm. I love watching them, while the classes are going on, but right now for the Durga Utsav, the school is closed. There is a small dispensary with a doctor and a nurse. They can take care of basic illnesses like fever and stomach pain. For complicated ailments and medicines, the people have to go to the neighboring town. There is a small grocery shop where the basic necessities for sustenance are available. Besides the grocery shop, there is a tea stall with some snacks available. The tea stall is the prime meeting point for all the villagers during the evening time, even in other hours of the day the stall is never empty. It is always full of people sipping tea and chatting, breaking the world’s news to each other. There is a post office in my village. 

My favorite spot is a small rivulet. I love going there and spending time because beyond the rivulet lay are acres of grasslands and hills. For an artist, it will be a perfect picture to paint. All, young and old swim and bathe in the rivulet. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. Whenever I come to my village, I feel immense pleasure because of its peaceful and serene environment. I get to enjoy some fresh and organic vegetables and fruits here. The people in my village are very helpful and they live in harmony with no grudges. They live like one big family who always takes care of each other. We can hardly find this act of compassion back in the city. 

My village is a small abode for happy people.  Here they live in harmony and peace. The village people are very hardworking and thus they must have a good source of upliftment. Like the village’s schools and clinics should be maintained and increased in number. The farmers should be facilitated by helping them to leverage their sales, make them notified about the modern techniques used in farming, and give them compensation and knowledge of the true market price of their crops. Thus, I would request governmental authorities to come forward and uplift the medical, educational, and farming facilities in the village.

You can buy vegetables from the garden and fish from the fisherman who has caught them. The environment is pretty good, there is no traffic jams or too much pressure.

There are some disadvantages too. I am pretty confused about the medical and treatment system. Because there are not such experienced doctors. That’s the biggest concern for me.

Village Market is a very interesting part of our village. It is the biggest market in this area. People from 6 villages come here to buy and sell their products. Sunday and Thursday are two market days. A huge amount of people gathered in this place in these two days. 

Most people come here to buy food, rice, fishes, and other needed things. This market is popular for fresh fishes. And sometimes people come from cities to buy fish here. 

Because of a huge gathering, it has been risky sometimes too. There is a risk of pickpockets. But overall this village market is very essential for the villagers.

Everyone sits in front of their homes and hangs out under the moonlight on summer nights. They gather in the winter to talk, make fires to keep warm, and cook food for everyone.

An expert on Parkinson’s disease from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center visited the White House eight times in eight months from last summer through this spring, including at least once for a meeting with President Biden’s physician, according to official visitor logs.

The expert, Dr. Kevin Cannard, is a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders and recently published a paper on Parkinson’s. The logs, released by the White House, document visits from July 2023 through March of this year. More recent visits, if there have been any, would not be released until later under the White House’s voluntary disclosure policy.

It was unclear whether Dr. Cannard was at the White House to consult specifically about the president or was there for unrelated meetings. Dr. Cannard’s LinkedIn page describes him as “supporting the White House Medical Unit” for more than 12 years. His biography on Doximity , a website for health professionals, lists him as a “neurology consultant to the White House Medical Unit and the physician to the president” from 2012 to 2022, which would include the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump.

Records from the Obama administration, when Mr. Biden was vice president, show that Dr. Cannard made at least 10 visits in 2012 plus a family tour; four in 2013; one in 2014; four in 2015; and eight in 2016. Mr. Trump rescinded Mr. Obama’s voluntary White House visitors disclosure policy, so records are not available for his four years in office.

Dr. Cannard did not respond to repeated requests for comment. In a statement released at 9:40 p.m. on Monday, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the White House physician, confirmed that Dr. Cannard had seen Mr. Biden three times during the three and a half years of his presidency, but did not directly say whether any of his other visits were related to consulting on the president’s health.

Instead, Dr. O’Connor implied that most of Dr. Cannard’s visits were related to treating other people who work at the White House. “Prior to the pandemic, and following its end, he has held regular neurology clinics at the White House Medical Clinic in support of the thousands of active-duty members assigned in support of White House operations,” Dr. O’Connor wrote.

It was the month of July when our school decided to take us to see a typical Indian Village. We were all very excited and got on the school bus and were on our way to the village.

As soon as the bus reached the village called Garhi, a crowd of children gathered all around. Apparently. a school bus was not a common sight in the village. They stared at us as we got down from the bus and then started talking to each other pointing with their fingers at the various features of the bus that interested them.

The first thing that struck us was that the village was very different from the city. There were brick houses painted with yellow or blue paint. There were puddles of water here and there where the rainwater had collected. Outside the houses was an open gutter filled with filthy water with mosquitoes floating on it.

The chief of the village came to greet us and to take us around. He first took us to see the temple. We passed through the narrow muddy lanes with scarcely space for two people to walk abreast. The villagers collected on the corner of the street or stood in their doorways to look at us. They were quite surprised to see school children paying them a visit.

The temple was built of brick and stone and was painted white. There was a hall and in strong contrast to the muck outside, was surprisingly clean. The hall was cool and we were amused to see the priest lying on a “Charpoy” with his mouth open. There were three small rooms for the idols of the Gods and Goddesses but these were locked at this time of the day.

We were next taken to see the primary school. The school was a yellow building with five or six rooms. I peeped into one classroom and saw the teacher standing by her desk and the children reciting arithmetic tables in sing-song voices. We were told that the school was up to the fifth standard. The younger children were fairly regular but afterward, the attendance dropped because parents would take them away to work in the fields or to help them at home to mind their younger brothers and sisters while the parents were away at work. We had created quite a disturbance in the school and the teachers and children all stopped their work and gaped at us. So we quickly left and were taken to the fields.

The farmlands offered a lovely sight. There was a cool breeze blowing. The tall green stalks of grain seemed to wave at us. The fields stretched on endlessly till the eye could see. Here and there in the midst of the fields, there were scarecrows with their loose clothes and hats waving in the breeze and frightening away the birds. Farmhouses built of mud and thatched roofs could also be seen. After being told the various method used for irrigating the land, and the dependence of the farmers on the right weather conditions, we were taken to see the community center.

The community center was a big hall where women were taught to stitch clothes and adult education classes were held. These activities were conducted by social workers who visited the village three times a week for this purpose. The chief of the village was very proud of it, for that was one achievement to his credit since he had put in a lot of effort to get it built and move government agencies to send social workers to the village. He said he was now trying to get a dispensary built and again request the government to send qualified doctors to the village. We were all quite impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of this man to uplift his village.

Finally, we went home. We felt sorry for the villagers who were still living in such backward conditions. In spite of the efforts of the social workers, we could see that it would still be a long time before one could be proud of that village.

I hit a kangaroo in my new car. It was a Kia, it still is, but I’m now waiting for half of the body to come on a boat from Korea, so I won’t be seeing it for a while. But that’s OK because I live in Hurstbridge, and we are always prepared for that kind of thing out here.

Our little community, 30 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, sits at the point where concrete suburbia meets bushland, and we happily give way to nature all the time.

Our colonial-style village is perfect for people who lose their cars because of a sudden encounter with the wildlife. Everything is within a 10-minute walk: the friendly organic fruit and veggie guy, the friendly butcher, the friendly family-run baker and the friendly lady who sells and possibly makes her own earwax candles.

But there’s more to Hurstbridge than our walkable urban design and organic produce. We’re lots of fun, too, and we love tourists.

Our 1½-kilometre shopping strip is testament to that, featuring nine cafes (that’s one latte every 165 metres), two places where you can get a massage, a French patisserie, a Japanese lantern shop, a place where you can buy crocheted chickens, and Ric the mechanic, who everyone knows because he runs one of the few practical businesses in town.

And then there are the bicycles. We have lots of visitors on bicycles, the sporty types with expensive gear.

On any given day, you’ll find them tearing down the main street on their way to the Yarra Valley. You can get stuck behind a peloton for days, waiting for a moment to safely overtake on the narrow, winding roads, or you can simply stop and observe one of the many robust conversations between a cashed-up cyclist and a cashed-up tradie who have met in less-than-ideal circumstances on the road, and it’s all gone downhill from there.

Hurstbridge is a proudly historic suburb, too, settled by Europeans in 1842, and we strive to be a living embodiment of our past. The latest census confirms a whopping 88 per cent of the local population were born in Australia, compared with only 70 per cent of Victorians.

Everywhere you turn, there are historic buildings, filled with photographs of bullocks and steam trains and bushrangers, and you will never hear a local describe Hurstbridge as a suburb because it just doesn’t fit with our wild colonial vibe. No self-respecting bushranger could ever admit to living in a suburb. Instead, we prefer terms like “town”, “village” or even “shire”, if you’re the romantic type – the fact that Hurstbridge is formally listed as one of Melbourne’s 321 suburbs is of little concern because, like all good frontier communities, we make our own rules.

Our century-old Wattle Festival attracts hundreds of visitors each year, who come to our town/village/shire to ride in a cart pulled by a bullock, which is actually a large horse, but you can pretend. Or you can splash out on a quaint memento of your day travelling back in time, such as a tea towel with a print of the 100-year-old Hurstbridge Post Office or a recently crocheted chicken.

The Wattle Festival also marks the one day in the year when the trains on the Hurstbridge line are guaranteed to run on time because we swap the stupid electric versions for a big old girl powered by reliable steam, so it’s worth a visit just for that.

But it’s not all fun and historical games out here in Hurstbridge. We have our problems, too, such as an alcohol consumption rate that is consistently above the average recorded in the Victorian Population Health Survey, and a discernible cultural tension between the mainstream Wattle population and the smattering of alternative lifestylers, who hide away in our densest bushland settings and rarely venture out to visit the butcher or the baker, but they will make a run for the lady who sells and possibly makes her own earwax candles.

Hurstbridge was among the 78 communities affected by the Black Saturday fires . My family had been living in the area for only two weeks when that 46-degree day hit. We sheltered inside our poorly insulated hillside home, trying to distract our small children from the strange thumping sound outside, as the bodies of giant sulphur-crested cockatoos fell with heat exhaustion from the gum trees, and landed dead on our deck. We thought we had moved to hell.

That night, the horizon lit up, bright orange with the glow of fires that would get within 10 minutes of Hurstbridge, before turning on the 100km/h wind and travelling in the opposite direction to Marysville, where 34 people died.

For months afterwards, the shock and the grief in the community was palpable, as we tried to reassure our children, and each other, that we were safe but all the while keeping an eye out for signs that another fire was on the way.

That was 15 years ago and Black Saturday is now part of our suburb’s history, but the community has bounced back: the residents of Hurstbridge and our wacky businesses, the bicycles and the wildlife and, bless them, the tourists.

And, in a few weeks, I’m hoping my Kia will bounce back, too, so I can get on with the serious business of trailing those cyclists and looking out for the kangaroos.

I put the free version of Perplexity.ai through my coding tests - here's what happened

I've tested the coding capabilities  of many generative AI tools for ZDNET -- and this time, it's  Perplexity 's turn.

Perplexity feels like a cross between a search engine and an AI chatbot. When I asked Perplexity how it differs from other generative AI tools, the chatbot said it uses real-time information access, indexing the web daily. Users can narrow searches by asking Perplexity to focus on sources or platforms.

The free version of Perplexity is fairly limited. It uses OpenAI's GPT-3.5 model for analysis, only allows five questions a day, and while it supports document uploads, those uploads are limited to three per day.

The Pro version of Perplexity is $20/month. That version allows for unlimited "quick" searches, 600 Pro searches per day, and AI model optionality. You can choose from GPT-4o , Claude 3 , Sonar Large (LLaMa 3), and others. The Pro version also provides $5/month in API credits.

We decided to forego the Pro and run the free version for our initial test of Perplexity's programming prowess. I've run these coding tests against AI chatbots with varied results. Now let's dig into the results of each test and see how they compare to previous tests using Claude 3.5 Sonnet ,  Microsoft Copilot ,  Meta AI ,  Meta Code Llama ,  Google Gemini Advanced , and  ChatGPT .

1. Writing a WordPress plugin

This challenge asks several things. First, it asks the chatbot to create a user interface for entering lines to be randomized (but not de-duped). Then the test requires the chatbot to create a button that not only randomizes the list but makes sure any duplicate items are presented such that they are not next to each other in the resulting list.

So far, most AI chatbots, except for Meta Code Llama, have created a fairly reasonable UI. Some were more attractive than others, but they all did the job.

However, only ChatGPT (powered by GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4o) produced the correct randomized output. Most of the other AI chatbots just presented a button which, when clicked, did nothing.

Perplexity worked. It produced a UI accurate to the spec, and the Randomize button worked and separated duplicate lines.

This test fixes a validation function that checks for dollars and cents. 

My original code was in error, allowing only integer dollars, but no cents. I found out when a user submitted a bug report. I initially fed the incorrect code to ChatGPT, which did a good job of rewriting the function to allow dollar amounts and two digits to the right of the decimal point.

Perplexity also passed this test.

The code it generated could have been tighter, but it worked. In a case where the string provided by the user contained only zeros, Perplexity's implementation removed everything. To compensate, Perplexity checked for zero first.

This approach is workable, but the regular expression Perplexity generated could have been written to account for this variation. It's a simple implementation choice and many qualified programmers would have taken either path, so Perplexity's approach is acceptable.

Perplexity's code correctly tested the submitted data to ensure it matched the dollars and cents format. The code then converted the string to a number. It also checked if the number parsed was valid and non-negative.

Overall, Perplexity produced solid code. Here are the aggregate results of this and previous tests:

• ChatGPT using GPT-4o:  Succeeded
• Microsoft Copilot:  Failed
• Meta AI:  Failed
• Meta Code Llama:  Succeeded
• Google Gemini Advanced:  Failed
• ChatGPT  using GPT- 4:  Succeeded
• ChatGPT  using GPT- 3.5:  Succeeded

3. Finding an annoying bug

A bug in my code confused me, so I turned to ChatGPT for help. As it turned out, the source of the problem was not intuitively obvious, which is why I missed it.

A parameter passing error requires knowledge of how the WordPress framework functions. I missed the bug because PHP seemed to imply the problem was in one part of the code when, in fact, the issue was how the code transitioned through a WordPress-specific operation.

Perplexity found the problem and correctly diagnosed the fix.

4. Writing a script

This final test analyzes the extensiveness of the AI chatbot's knowledge base. The test asks for code to be generated that requires knowledge of the Chrome document object model, AppleScript, and a third-party Mac scripting tool called Keyboard Maestro.

Perplexity did not appear to know about Keyboard Maestro, so it did not write the necessary call to the scripting language to retrieve the value of a variable.

Perplexity also made the same mistake Claude 3.5 Sonnet made , generating a line of AppleScript code that would result in a syntax error message upon running. This mistake indicated a lack of knowledge about how AppleScript ignores upper and lower case, and where it considers the case of a string when comparing two values.

• Perplexity: Failed
• ChatGPT using GPT-4o:  Succeeded but with reservations
• Google Gemini Advanced:  Succeeded
• ChatGPT  using GPT- 3.5:  Failed

Overall results

Here are the overall results of the four tests:

• Perplexity: 3 out of 4 succeeded
• Claude 3.5 Sonnet:   1 out of 4 succeeded
• ChatGPT using GPT-4o:   4 out of 4 succeeded  but with a caveat
• Microsoft Copilot:   0 out of 4 succeeded
• Meta AI:   1 out of 4 succeeded
• Meta Code Llama:   1 out of 4 succeeded
• Google Gemini Advanced:   1 out of 4 succeeded
• ChatGPT  using GPT- 4:   4 out of 4 succeeded
• ChatGPT  using GPT- 3.5:   3 out of 4 succeeded

Overall, Perplexity did well. I thought the AI chatbot might fail the fourth test, because GPT-3.5 did, and the free version of Perplexity uses the GPT-3.5 model.

I was surprised by these results because Microsoft's Copilot is also supposed to use OpenAI's AI engine, but Copilot failed at pretty much everything. Perplexity mirrored GPT-3.5's results, which makes sense since the free version uses GPT-3.5.

Villages are a beauty and today`s generation is really missing the beauty of villages. Villages are so silent and calm and pollution free. Though I live in a city with the maddening crowd and sound, my parents used to live in villages and I have been there many times.

Both my parents come from villages, and I look forward to go their places during my vacations. It is so calm and peaceful and the beauty of nature is just fantastic.

With not many families around, they know each other so well, that they all almost live like a large family. You could step into your neighbor’s house at any time and you would be welcomed with yummy dishes and snacks. Though the transportation has advanced, there are still places where you need to walk.

I remember, while visiting my grandmother’s place, we had to walk through the paddy fields to reach her home!! It was such an experience that I guess very few, who are of my age would have had.

You could take all the time in the world, to enjoy the beauty, stand in between the fields, enjoy the cool breeze that flows through your hair and the wonderful scent of damp soil, all together making you feel like heaven.

The backwaters are another beauty to the villages. You have small streams that club to the lakes and backwaters. This stream water is so fresh and crystal clear. You could walk through them and the cool water just rushes over your feet and makes you feel so cool. Hours could be spent by simply sitting and admiring the beauty of nature.

The sunset is a beautiful scene to be viewed. The large orange burning ball, slowly setting at the long horizon among the fields is a splendid view that no city could offer you. The nights are so cold and peaceful and one could have a sound and peaceful sleep in the quietness of the village.

For all those who have not been to the villages and spent their life among the fast moving gadgets, a break in a while is a necessity and there is no other better place to relax yourself other than just having a visit to a village. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of nature through villages.

Millions of Texans are without power Tuesday after Hurricane Beryl made its third and final landfall near Matagorda early Monday.

Rainfall brought by Beryl caused near-record flooding in the Houston area , raising some bayous, like the White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou, nearly 24 feet in the span of nine hours Monday. City officials say  dangerous driving conditions have prompted road delays, closures , and  several rescues .

A heat advisory was issued for Tuesday across most of southeast Texas. Heat index values are expected to rise to around 106 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, bringing several inches of rainfall to several parts of the state, prompting Acting Governor Dan Patrick to issue a disaster declaration for 121 counties , nearly half the counties in the state.

More than a day later, the hurricane has left about two million customers along the mid-to-upper coast and in East Texas without power.

When will power be restored?

CenterPoint Energy said they expect to restore power to nearly 1 million customers by end of day Wednesday.

Explanation

                                                      A LOCAL FESTIVAL IN MY VILLAGE        The arrival of civilization and western culture has made us to forget our cultural past Our heritage has been lost and traded off for the western ways. Those cultural heritages which had delighted our fore-fathers are looked down upon by youths who regard these heritages as old-fashioned and anachronistic.        I must confess that I did share this opinion with my peers but l have to give it another thought when I was privileged to accompany my parents to our village to witness a local festival.        The festival is usually celebrated every first Saturday of September in my village, Obong. Every year, the indigenes travel from far and near to convene at Obudu Market Square, the venue of the annual new yam festival.        The origin of this festival goes as far back as when the first group of settlers fled to the plateau for safety and decided to dwell there. I can recollect vividly what my grandfather told me about the first festival when the settlers had their first new yam harvested. Tradition has it that the very first celebration was held at the summit of the Obudu plateau. The joy and happiness shared among the people was enough to pull the heavens according to my grandmother. Ever since, the celebration has taken the same pattern.       Last year the new yam festival which I witnessed began on Thursday. The day preceding that Thursday, all men in the village woke up very early in the morning and left for their farms. They returned in :e evening with their children carrying large tubers of yam on their heads. I joined the village children to carry the tubers which we dropped at the market square.       In the evening, the men gathered after taking their bath to discuss over a gourd of freshly-tapped palmwine. Their discussion took them into the far night before they went to sleep in their various homes.        Very early the next day. the women started peeling the yams for cooking They brought all ingredients together for the cooking while the young men prepared themselves to carry masquerades. The girls, like myself. were not allowed to cook but we helped the women in cooking the food.        Saturday finally arrived and the festival was scheduled to begin at noon. As early as 7:00 am on that day, the women were up again to add finishing touches to their cooking and finally they pounded the yams. The real festival began with the arrival of the 'Usu.. the chief who was followed by the masquerades. The young girls like myself dressed beautifully with the 'jigida' beads around our waists. We danced to entertain the Usu' and his chiefs who occasionally waved their locally made fans. Then the food was served and there was more than enough to go round. Everybody ate to his or her satisfaction. Finally. after all the dancing. singing and eating the festival came to an end in the early hours of Sunday morning.        I could say that this festival is of great importance to the Obudu people because it is the only time of the year when all indigenes of the village far and near. come together to felicitate. Moreover, the festival gave me a sense of pride that I have a heritage which l can be proud of.
