A panel of five leading historians of women, gender and sexuality set out their vision of what women’s history should be doing in the next thirty years. The roundtable event was moderated by Professor Ruth Harris, Professor of Modern History, University of Oxford. Directly following the discussion was an Address by Hillary Rodham Clinton, 67th U.S. Secretary of State.

Women Making History

For the first time, on October 14, 1920, the University of Oxford granted degrees to women, many of whom had successfully completed the work necessary to earn those degrees decades earlier. To mark the Centenary of this transformative event, Vice-Chancellor Louise Richardson partnered with former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to create a new endowed chair in women’s history at Oxford, the first post of its kind in the world. Professor Brenda Stevenson was soon appointed the inaugural Hillary Rodham Clinton Professor of Women’s History. Vice-Chancellor Richardson launched Oxford’s year-long Centenary celebration in an insightful and thoroughly enjoyable discussion with Secretary Clinton and Professor Stevenson.

The James Ford Lectures in British History

The Ford Lectures in British History were founded by a bequest from James Ford, and inaugurated by S.R.Gardiner in 1896-7. Since then, an annual series has been delivered over six weeks in the Hilary term and they have long been established as the most prestigious series in Oxford and an important annual event in the History Faculty calendar.

PREFATORY NOTE

The Lectures on Modern History were delivered by Lord Acton in his ordinary course as Professor in the academical years 1899-1900 and 1900-01. The Inaugural Lecture on the Study of History, here reprinted, was delivered on June 11, 1895. The document printed in Appendix I. is of great interest, as exhibiting the ideals of Lord Acton as a student and the aims of the undertaking which he planned and still bears his name.

It is hoped shortly to issue in another volume the Lectures on the French Revolution, and thus to complete the record of his work as Professor. The Introductory Essay deals exclusively with his Cambridge work. A more general account of his career will precede the volumes of essays and reviews. The editors wish to thank Professor Henry Jackson for his kind advice with regard to the Introduction.

The second impression differs from the first in that a few small errors in the text have been corrected. The editors desire to state that the Lectures are printed from the manuscript exactly in the form in which they were delivered.

This work was published before January 1, 1929, and is in the public domain worldwide because the author died at least 100 years ago.

This major demonstrates that the student has engaged in a sustained study of premodern cultures and has become competent in multiple methods of historical inquiry. Although it begins from a basis in the Graeco-Roman world, this major encourages students to examine the cultures and civilizations of the Mediterranean world more broadly, including those of the Near and Middle East, drawing upon the curricular offerings of multiple academic departments and exploring rich terrain for intercultural comparison.

The major in Ancient History consists of 12 courses, configured as follows:

Cluster 1 (Core Introductory Courses) 

Any 2 of the following: ANCH 0100 Ancient Middle Eastern History and Civilization, ANCH 0101 Ancient Greece, ANCH 0102 Ancient Rome. [Old 3-digit numbers: 025, 026, 027.]

Cluster 2 (History of the Graeco-Roman World)

Any 4 courses in Ancient History (ANCH) or Classical Studies (CLST) with a focus on the history of the Greco-Roman world, of which 2 must be at the 3000-level or above. [Old 3-digit numbers: "200-level or above".]

Cluster 3 (Area Groupings)

Any 6 courses, of which 2 must be at the 3000-level or above, in Ancient History (ANCH), Classical Studies (CLST), Greek (GREK), or Latin (LATN), or in other areas of premodern or ancient studies as approved by the Undergraduate Chair. [Old 3-digit number: "200-level or above".]

NOTE: In selecting these courses, students should aim to pursue an emphasis in one of the following three area groupings: 

• A. Graeco-Roman Culture in a Broader Context 
• B. Languages of the Ancient Mediterranean World
• C. Comparative Studies of Premodern Cultures

In the course of meeting the above coursework, students declaring a major in Classical Studies or Ancient History after May, 2022 are required:

• EITHER to take one class that centrally addresses a methodological problem in the study of ancient inequalities and/or their reception,
• OR to complete a course paper or project that addresses these questions. (This project must be pre-approved by the course instructor and the undergraduate chair.)

ANCH 4998 Senior Research Paper (fall), which may be counted toward Cluster 3. This option requires the proposal of a  Senior Research Paper , writing of the paper, and departmental approval of Honors for the completed paper. [Old 3-digit number: 399.]
