How to Make Apps on the iPhone Bigger: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making apps bigger on your iPhone is a quick and straightforward process. By accessing the “Display & Brightness” settings, you can change the view to “Zoomed” which will enlarge the icons and text throughout your iPhone’s interface, including your apps. This can be particularly helpful for those with visual impairments or those who prefer a larger display.

After you complete the action, you’ll notice that everything on your iPhone’s screen appears larger. App icons will take up more space, and text will be easier to read. This can make navigation and general use of your iPhone more comfortable for those who struggle with small text and icons.

Introduction

Have you ever found yourself squinting at your iPhone screen, trying to decipher the tiny icons and text? Or perhaps you’ve thought, “these apps could definitely be a bit bigger for my liking.” Well, you’re not alone, and thankfully, Apple has built-in features to accommodate this preference. The ability to make apps bigger on the iPhone is not just a matter of personal comfort; it’s a crucial feature for accessibility. People with visual impairments or those who simply want a clearer view can benefit significantly from enlarged apps.

This feature isn’t just for a select group of users, either. With the ever-growing screen sizes of iPhones, reaching for the top apps can be a stretch – literally. Enlarging your app icons can make your phone more ergonomic and user-friendly. Plus, let’s not forget, bigger icons can add a fresh look to your interface, making your iPhone feel new again. So, whether for accessibility, comfort, or aesthetics, learning how to make your apps bigger is a handy trick for any iPhone user.

Step by Step Tutorial on How to Make Apps on the iPhone Bigger

This section will walk you through the process of enlarging the apps on your iPhone. By the end of these steps, your apps should appear larger on your home screen.

Step 1: Open Settings

  • Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone.

This is the app with the gear icon, typically found on your home screen. It’s the control center for all your iPhone’s system preferences.

Step 2: Tap on Display & Brightness

Scroll down and tap on the “Display & Brightness” option.

Here, you’ll find various display settings that affect the appearance of your iPhone’s screen.

Step 3: Select View

Under the “Display Zoom” section, tap on “View.”

This option allows you to switch between the standard and zoomed view of your display.

Step 4: Choose Zoomed

Select “Zoomed,” then tap “Set.”

Your iPhone will restart to apply the new settings. Once it turns back on, you’ll notice that your apps are bigger.

BenefitExplanation
Improved AccessibilityEnlarging apps makes them easier to see and interact with, which is essential for users with visual impairments or those who struggle with small touch targets.
Enhanced ComfortBigger apps reduce the strain on your eyes and can make using your iPhone a more comfortable experience overall.
Better ErgonomicsWith larger apps, it’s easier to reach and tap them without overextending your thumb, which can be particularly helpful on larger iPhone models.
DrawbackExplanation
Reduced Screen Real EstateWhen you enlarge your apps, you’ll see fewer of them on the screen at any one time, which might mean more swiping to find what you’re looking for.
Potential Layout IssuesSome apps may not be optimized for the “Zoomed” view, leading to layout problems or cut-off text within the app.
Aesthetic ChangesNot everyone will like the look of larger icons, and it might take some time to get used to the new appearance of your home screen.

Additional Information

When you’re adjusting the size of your apps on the iPhone, it’s important to keep in mind that this change affects more than just your home screen. The “Zoomed” view also increases the size of text and buttons within the apps, making the entire user interface easier to see and use. This can be particularly beneficial when reading emails or browsing the web.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that this feature is reversible. If you decide that the larger icons aren’t for you, simply go back into the “Display & Brightness” settings and switch back to the standard view.

Another tip for users who need even larger text is to check out the “Accessibility” settings on your iPhone. Here, you can find additional options to increase text size and boldness, which can be used in conjunction with the “Zoomed” view for maximum readability. Lastly, don’t forget that this feature is exclusive to iPhones, so if you’re using an iPad, you’ll need to look for other ways to enlarge your apps.

  • Tap on “Display & Brightness.”
  • Select “View” under the “Display Zoom” section.
  • Choose the “Zoomed” view and tap “Set.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will making my apps bigger affect my battery life.

No, changing the display view to “Zoomed” will not have a noticeable impact on your iPhone’s battery life.

Can I make the text bigger as well?

Yes, you can increase text size separately by going to “Settings” > “Accessibility” > “Display & Text Size.”

Does this feature work on all iPhone models?

The “Zoomed” view is available on most iPhone models, but it’s best to check if your specific model supports this feature.

Will apps still function the same way in “Zoomed” view?

Yes, all apps should function normally, although some may display content differently to accommodate the larger view.

Can I use the “Zoomed” view on an iPad?

No, the “Zoomed” view is exclusive to iPhone. iPads have different display settings to adjust app and text size.

In today’s world, where our smartphones are almost an extension of ourselves, ensuring they suit our needs is vital. Making apps on the iPhone bigger is not only about personal preference but also about accessibility and comfort. It’s a simple adjustment that can have a significant impact on your daily usage of your device.

Whether you’re someone who struggles with small text or you just want an easier way to navigate your iPhone, the “Zoomed” view is a feature worth exploring. And remember, this is just one of many customizable options your iPhone offers to enhance your user experience. Keep tweaking, keep exploring, and make your iPhone work for you.

How to Make Apps Larger on iPhone

blue and white logo guessing game

Making apps larger on an iPhone can be essential for users who find the default app size too small for comfortable viewing. This is especially beneficial for those with visual impairments or for anyone who prefers larger icons for easier navigation. Apple has integrated features within the iOS that allow for increased icon sizes, leaving behind the need for third-party applications or complex settings alterations.

The method involves adjusting the iPhone’s built-in display settings to enable a larger, more visible interface. It is a straightforward process that centers on the ‘Display & Brightness’ section within the iPhone’s settings. Users can select ‘ Display Zoom ‘ to alter the view, switching between ‘Standard’ and ‘Zoomed’ to find their preferred icon size. This change is not only reflected in-app icons but also in other display elements across the system, providing a consistent and enhanced visual experience.

Making the Most of Your iPhone Display

If your iPhone’s app icons feel a little small or you have difficulty reading text, don’t worry! There are a few different ways to adjust settings and make everything a bit more comfortable for your eyes.

Option 1: Display Zoom

This method changes the size of everything on your screen, including apps, text, and other elements. Here’s how to enable it:

  • Open your iPhone’s Settings app.
  • Go to Display & Brightness .
  • Under Display Zoom , tap on View .
  • Select Zoomed and tap Set at the top right corner.
  • Your phone will restart to apply the change.

Option 2: Increase Text Size

If you want the icons to remain the same size, but need larger text for better readability, follow these steps:

  • Go to your iPhone’s Settings app.
  • Select Display & Brightness .
  • Tap on Text Size .
  • Drag the slider to your desired text size.

Option 3: Accessibility Features

For more fine-tuned control or if you have specific visual needs, check out the Accessibility settings:

  • Select Accessibility .
  • Tap on Display & Text Size .

Here, you’ll find options like:

  • Bold Text: Makes text easier to read.
  • Larger Text: Offers even greater text size options.
  • Button Shapes: Underlines buttons for better visibility

Key Takeaways

  • Easy steps exist to enlarge app icons for better visibility on iPhones.
  • Display settings offer a ‘Display Zoom’ feature to adjust the view.
  • Changes affect icons and other display elements for consistent enlarged view.

Adjusting Display Settings on iPhone

iPhone users can enhance their screen’s usability by adjusting a few settings. This makes the phone easier to use for those who find the default settings a challenge for their eyesight.

Using Display & Brightness Settings

In the Settings app, go to Display & Brightness . Here, users can alter the screen’s view between Standard and Zoomed . The Zoomed setting makes everything bigger, including app icons and touch targets on the Home screen. For newer iPhone models, this feature is known as Display Zoom .

Enhancing Visibility Through Accessibility

For users with visual impairments, the Settings menu contains an Accessibility section. Tap on Display & Text Size where options like Larger Text can be activated. This setting allows for text size adjustments which apply to many apps and system features, improving readability.

Configuring Home Screen Layout

The Settings menu also offers a way to Use Large App Icons . This option is found under Home Screen settings and increases the size of app icons, providing bigger touch targets for users. It simplifies finding and tapping apps on the iPhone’s Home Screen.

Optimizing App View for Different iPhone Models

When you use your iPhone, making sure that the apps look good and are easy to use is key. Let’s look at how to adjust the view for various iPhone models.

Utilizing iPhone’s Zoomed Mode

iPhone models starting from the iPhone 6 onward offer a setting known as Zoomed Mode. This helps users who need a larger display for better navigation. To switch to Zoomed Mode, go to Settings, then Display & Brightness, and select View under the Display Zoom section. Here, you can toggle between Standard and Zoomed views. The Zoomed option enlarges icons and text across most apps.

Modifying Text Size for Better Readability

Larger text helps with reading emails and browsing the web. To change text size, visit Settings and tap on Display & Brightness. Then, select Text Size and adjust the slider to increase text size. You can also use the Accessibility menu to turn on Bold Text, enhancing readability.

Tailoring Display to Individual Needs

Every user has different needs. By customizing the display settings to match those needs, one can create a more user-friendly iPhone experience . For fine-tuning, options like adjusting the screen brightness and enabling Increase Contrast can be found in the Accessibility settings. This is beneficial for seeing things more clearly and can be helpful for conserving battery life.

Exploring Alternatives for iPad Usage

For users with both an iPhone and an iPad, the larger display of an iPad offers an alternate way to experience apps. iPads can run the same iOS apps in a landscape mode, often with more detailed layouts and additional panels. The iPad’s larger screen can offer an enhanced visual experience with easier gesture navigation, especially for apps that require more space for content, like drawing or photo editing tools.

By using these settings effectively, you can better adapt your iPhone or iPad for improved visibility and ease of use.

Figma announces big redesign with AI

Figma is launching a presentation feature, too..

By Jay Peters , a news editor who writes about technology, video games, and virtual worlds. He’s submitted several accepted emoji proposals to the Unicode Consortium.

A screenshot demonstrating Figma’s new AI tool.

Figma is announcing a bunch of new features at its Config conference today, including a major UI redesign, new generative AI tools to help people more easily make projects, and built-in slideshow functionality.

Let’s start with the redesign, which is intended to “lay the foundation for the next decade,” according to a blog post . You’ll see things like a new toolbar, rounded corners, and 200 new icons. As part of the design refresh, the company wants to “focus the canvas less on our UI and more on your work” and make something that’s approachable to new users while still being useful to Figma experts.

A screenshot showing Figma’s new UI.

Figma says this is the company’s third “significant redesign” since Figma’s closed beta launch. The new look is rolling out as part of a limited beta, and users can join a waitlist if they want to try it out.

Beyond the redesign, the headline feature addition is new generative AI tools, which look like a useful way to quickly get started with a design. They’re basically a Figma-focused version of the “draft an email”-type AI tools we’ve seen many times.

In a briefing, Figma chief product officer Yuhki Yamashita showed me an example of how Figma could create an app design for a new restaurant. A few seconds after he typed the prompt into a textbox, Figma mocked up an app with menu listings, a tab bar, and even buttons for delivery partners like Uber Eats and DoorDash. It looked like a generic mobile app mock-up, but Yamashita was able to start tweaking it right away.

In another example, Yamashita asked Figma AI to spin up a design for a recipe page for chocolate chip cookies, and sure enough, it did — including an AI-generated image of a cookie. Over Zoom, it looked like a pretty accurate image, but I can’t imagine that a basic image of a chocolate chip cookie is hard for an AI generator to make.

Figma is also introducing AI features that could help speed up small tasks in big ways, such as “AI-enhanced” asset search and auto-generated text in designs instead of generic Lorem ipsum placeholder text.

Ideally, all of the new Figma AI tools will allow people who are newer to Figma to test ideas more easily while letting those who are more well versed in the app iterate more quickly, according to Yamashita. “We’re using AI to lower the floor and raise the ceiling,” Yamashita says in an interview with The Verge — something CEO Dylan Field has said to The Verge as well .

Figma AI is launching in a limited beta beginning on Wednesday, and interested users can get on the waitlist. Figma says the beta period will run through the end of the year. While in beta, Figma’s AI tools will be free, but the company says it might have to introduce “usage limits.” Figma is also promising “clear guidance on pricing” when the AI features officially launch.

In a blog post, Figma also spelled out its approach to training its AI models. “All of the generative features we’re launching today are powered by third-party, out-of-the-box AI models and were not trained on private Figma files or customer data,” writes Kris Rasmussen, Figma’s CTO . “We fine-tuned visual and asset search with images of user interfaces from public, free Community files.”

Rasmussen adds that Figma trains its models so they learn patterns and “Figma-specific concepts and tools” but not from users’ content. Figma is also going to let Figma admins control whether Figma can train on “customer content,” which includes “file content created in or uploaded to Figma by a user, such as layer names and properties, text and images, comments, and annotations,” according to Rasmussen.

Figma won’t start training on this content until August 15th; however, you should know that Starter and Professional plans are by default opted in to share this data, while Organization and Enterprise plans are opted out.

The company is likely being specific about how it trains its AI models because of Adobe’s recent terms of service disaster, where the company had to clarify that it wouldn’t train AI on your work .

In addition to the redesign and the new AI features, Figma is adding a potentially very practical new tool: Figma Slides , a Google Slides-like feature built right into Figma. Yamashita says that users have already been hacking Figma to find a way to make slides, so now there’s an official method to build and share presentations right inside the app.

A screenshot of Figma Slides.

There are a few Figma-specific features that designers will likely appreciate. You’ll be able to tweak designs you’ve included in the deck in real time using Figma’s tools. (Note that those changes will only appear in the deck — tweaks won’t currently sync back to the original design files, though Yamashita says that Figma wants to make that possible eventually.)

You can also present an app prototype right from the deck, meaning you don’t need to make a convoluted screen recording just to demonstrate how one piece connects to another. You can also add interactive features for audience members, like a poll or an alignment scale, where people can plot on a range if they agree or disagree with something.

Figma Slides will be available in open beta beginning on Wednesday. It will be free while in beta but will become a paid feature when it officially launches. The company is also adding new features for its developer mode in Figma , including a “ready for dev” task list.

This year’s Config is the first since Adobe abandoned its planned $20 billion acquisition of Figma following regulatory scrutiny . With the dissolution of the merger, Adobe was forced to pay Figma a $1 billion breakup fee.

Who won the Biden-Trump debate? Biden's freeze draws age concerns

make it big app

WASHINGTON – Presidential debates are always about expectations. And Thursday’s verbal sparring match between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump was no exception.

The stakes were highest for Biden who, at age 81, was already battling perceptions he is too elderly for a second term. Meanwhile, Trump, 78, was facing concerns from moderate and swing voters about his at times bombastic style.

The biggest moment of the night came early, when Biden froze for several seconds while answering a question about the economy.

That – and all of the many other gaffes of the evening − will be replayed on cable news shows and shared thousands of times on social media for weeks to come. But how will it influence the 2024 election?

Here’s a breakdown of who came out on top and who fell short in the immediate aftermath.

Trump showed more energy than Biden

Experts USA TODAY spoke with said they saw sharp differences in the stamina of the two candidates on stage Thursday night, and they said Biden’s low-energy demeanor could hurt him for months to come.

In one of the most defining moments of the debate, Biden took a prolonged pause and froze while answering a question about the economy. After stuttering, the president continued, but began talking about COVID-19 and Medicare.

Even some of Biden's Democratic supporters felt his freeze on stage and his somewhat wooden performance tipped the scales in Trump's favor.

Trump sought to highlight Biden’s slower responses, at one point saying, “I really don't know what he said at the end of this, and I don't think he knows what he said, either."

Thomas Whalen, a presidential historian and professor at Boston University, said Biden was “looking his age,” while Trump was “more controlled and sticking to his talking points.”

Aaron Kall, director of Debate for the University of Michigan Debate Program, suggested Biden’s pauses “could spur endless news cycles about (his) age and fitness to serve another term in office.”

New debate format aimed to decrease chaos

If seeing Trump and Biden on stage together again didn’t provide enough deja vu, their matchup also marked the first time since 1960 that a presidential debate was held without a live audience . The last time was when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon clashed.

The format was designed to eliminate immediate reactions to candidates’ remarks. Aaron Kall, director of debate for the University of Michigan, suggested it forced genuine responses rather than scripted statements from the candidates.

Rather than rely on audience energy, Trump and Biden had to “trust their guts and instincts and previous debate experiences,” Kall said.

The  use of muted microphones in the debate also nearly eliminated the type of candidate crosstalk that has plagued past debates, including most recently during the GOP primary.

Georgia voters are central focus

Trump and Biden weren’t the only ones in the spotlight Thursday night. All-important Georgia voters were, too.

The location of the debate at CNN’s studios in Atlanta underscored Georgia’s role as crucial swing state in the election and served as a reminder that the candidate's messages − and bickering − will echo far beyond the stage.

Biden won Georgia by just under 12,000 votes in 2020. But recent polling this year has shown Trump with a slight edge over his competitor in the key battleground territory.

And the side-by-side comparison of the two candidates Thursday could very well sway the minds of undecided voters in the state. It was one of few opportunities the public will have to hear from the two men directly and judge for themselves who is the better pick for the country.

Not to mention that the location gave both candidates an opportunity to campaign around the Atlanta suburbs. Trump called in to a local barbershop on Wednesday to talk with a group his campaign called the Black American Business Leaders Barbershop Roundtable. And Biden’s campaign said the president planned to attend watch parties across the city after the debate to talk with voters.

Also of significance: The debate occurred only a few miles from the jail where Trump was booked last year on charges related to claims that he conspired to overturn the 2020 election.

A major money boost for Democrats and Republicans

Both major parties are expected to raise big dollars off Thursday’s affair. Similarly well-watched events have brought in the green for the two candidates.

Biden’s campaign said he raised $10 million in the 24 hours after the State of the Union address. After Trump’s felony conviction in his New York hush money trial, his campaign said it raised $34.8 million in small-dollar donations.

And both groups we’re leaning into their fundraising.

Hours before the debate began, Biden’s team sent out a message telling supporters that he was “counting on” them to donate at least $30.

“Tens of thousands of new supporters stepped up following my debates against Trump in 2020. And tonight, can’t be any different,” the message said.

The Democratic Party of Georgia also hosted a watch party charging $24 per advance ticket. Former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler was similarly hosting a high-dollar event for Trump the night of the debate.

Biden’s campaign said it had its best grassroots fundraising hours of the entire campaign leading up to the debate.

False claims abound

Ashley Koning, director of the Rutgers Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling, argued that “facts and truth” were the biggest losers of the night.

Both Trump and Biden made false comments throughout the debate that largely went unchecked by the moderators.

Trump repeated claims that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s fault. Trump claimed he offered Pelosi “10,000 soldiers” to stop the attack. Pelosi’s office has said, however, that she never received such an officer and that she wouldn’t have had the power to refuse either way.

The former real estate mogul also claimed the U.S. southern border is the most dangerous place in the world. There is no evidence to suggest this.

Biden also made incorrect claims. At one point, he claimed he was “the only president this century ... that doesn’t have any troops dying anywhere in the world.”

In 2021, during Biden’s presidency, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan as thousands tried to flee the Taliban’s takeover of the country.

RFK and third-party candidates absent from the conversation

Noticeably absent from the CNN stage? Robert F. Kennedy Jr .

Kennedy didn’t meet the qualifications for the debate, which required candidates to appear on a “sufficient number of state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote thresholds to win the presidency” and receive at least 15% in four qualifying national polls, according to CNN.

In a three-way matchup with Biden and Trump, Kennedy receives 10.7% of the vote, according to a Real Clear Politics average of polling .

Kennedy counterprogrammed the prime-time debate by answering the same questions as Biden and Trump live on a social media stream and on his website. But he remained largely out of sight for most voters on a night that centered on the two major party candidates.

The Best Way to Make a Roasted Chicken Is Not in the Oven

This speedy method for cooking whole chicken takes 25% less time and comes out perfect every time.

make it big app

Air fryer chicken is the best kitchen discovery I've made in years.

Some things just seem too good to be true. A perfectly roasted chicken in 45 minutes with almost no prep or cleanup after? It's true and it's all thanks to the speedy and efficient  air fryer . Cooking a whole chicken in the air fryer is the best kitchen hack I've found this year and it's my new go-to recipes for lazy Sunday meal with leftovers to use for the rest of the week.

ingredients for roast chicken on table

Air fryer chicken is one of the easiest and most satisfying recipes I've made lately.

I'm well versed in the joys of air fryer cooking , but air fryer chicken is perhaps the best discovery I've made while tinkering with the speedy convection cookers.

Here's why air fryer chicken is the best chicken.

Can you cook a whole chicken in an air fryer? Oh, yeah

The secret to great roasted chicken is high heat while not overcooking the bird for a crispy skin with moist, tender meat. An air fryer is the perfect vessel for this method since it envelops the food inside with hot quickly moving air and manages to crisp outer layers better than a full-size convection oven that features more widely dispersed heat. The smaller air fryer cooking chamber also means more consistent temps throughout a single session.

make it big app

Air fryers are typically smaller than wall ovens, but many models are capable of handling a 3- or 4-pound chicken. I cooked a full 4-pound roaster and it fit comfortably inside my Dreo  6-quart ChefMaker smart air fryer oven .

What size air fryer fits a whole chicken?

air fryer with food around it

I used a fancy smart air fryer but just about any 5-quart model will do.

This fancy souped-up air fryer has a steam feature and smart cooking programs, but I didn't need or use them. I cooked the chicken on basic air fryer mode at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for 55 minutes, flipping the bird (ha!) after 25. You won't need a fancy air fryer , either. This $120 Instant air fryer (on sale for $90) will get the job done. As will this $60 Gourmia model.

There was minimal prep in this air fryer chicken recipe, which I adapted from a few found online and my go-to oven-roasted chicken recipe. I whisked together a quick marinade with olive oil, grain mustard, salt, pepper and some of my favorite Mediterranean seasoning blend . I stuffed the chicken with half of an orange, some green onion and a bunch of fresh parsley that was down to its final days in the fridge.

About 10 minutes before I pulled it from the air fryer.

What to serve with roasted chicken

I served the chicken with rice made in my speedy and effortless  rice cooker , but I could have just as easily dropped some root vegetables in with the chicken and had myself with a full dinner to feed four or five -- all cooked in the confines of one nonstick air fryer basket.

An air fryer can burn your chicken so pay attention

My only other note when making an air fryer bird is to keep a close eye on the chicken, especially toward the end. The heat from an air fryer is intense and could burn the skin if you have it cranked up too high or leave it in too long. If your skin seems to be getting brown faster than the chicken is coming to temp inside, pull back on the heat and continue monitoring.

You can always fire it up again once the meat is cooked to get a crispy skin before serving. You'll know the meat is cooked when a meat probe reads 160 degrees Fahrenheit when plunged into the thickest part of the breast.

You'll need at least a 5-quart air fryer to make a roasted chicken.

What you need to make air fryer chicken

  • 4-pound chicken, giblets removed
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons grain mustard
  • Seasoning blend (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Lemon or orange
  • Fresh herbs

Almost done...

How to make air fryer roast chicken

  • Preheat air fryer to 360 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Whisk olive oil, mustard, seasoning blend, salt and pepper together
  • Rub mustard marinade over the entire chicken
  • Place chicken in air fryer basket breast down on top of the wire rack and cook for 25 minutes
  • Flip the bird breast up and cook for the remaining 25 minutes
  • Remove when juices run clear or an internal thermometer reads 160 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Let stand for 5 minutes before serving and pour juices from the air fryer basket over sliced chicken

There it is.

No coding skills how ai helped me launch my own app.

Marlene Ronstedt is the co-founder of Play by Ear , a Web3 & emerging tech consultancy company.

A couple of years ago, fascinated by the role technology plays in shaping our society, I began to explore the various tools and platforms powering our digital world. I attended Ruby on Rails workshops and taught myself some HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Soon, I befriended a programmer who further guided me down the rabbit hole.

I loved the idea of creating applications using code. However, the frustrating debugging process and the time wasted searching Stack Overflow for answers was off-putting. Even with a patient friend on my side, I didn't have all the answers I needed to keep me going.

Fast forward to today, AI has been incredible in teaching us new skills. Most of us have likely attempted to “replace” ourselves with AI, using it for tasks we have mastery in. Artists have created art, writers have prompted AI to write articles, and programmers have written code with AI. Although the results are decent, the consensus is that AI is not yet on par with human experts and won't replace them anytime soon.

That's a valid point when discussing top-level expertise. However, I think most people have disregarded how we can leverage AI to teach ourselves new skills. That's exactly what I've been doing for the last two months, relentlessly prompting various AI tools to help me build an entire iOS app from scratch.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The idea for my location-based reminder app came to me on a night train from Bangkok to the south of Thailand back in 2017. The train was delayed, and there was no way of knowing when it would be time to get up and prepare to disembark. Standard alarms are all time-based, so while I lay in my bunk with the train rattling on, I thought how useful it would be if someone built a location-based alarm. That someone was certainly not me, because my coding skills and my patience wouldn't allow for that.

I had some basic knowledge about app components from working in tech for about eight years, but I had never built an entire product by myself. Most of my time in tech was spent on the periphery: marketing, business development and operations. Nothing that would truly qualify me to build a functional product all by myself and launch it on the App Store.

But with AI on our side, my knowledge was sufficient enough to ask the right questions, get started, build a first front-end view and iterate step by step all the way to "How do I launch my iOS app on the App Store?"

I found that getting a first prototype by using AI is incredibly easy and can be achieved within an hour. My Twitter (now X) timeline is full of such examples. But refining the UI, backend logic and adding a database takes a bit more effort and time—in my case, one and a half months. An expert might have built what I did in just a couple of hours or a weekend. Still, I'm incredibly impressed that I was able to prompt my way through the entire process. And that is, impressed by AI, not by myself.

The AI rarely got it right on the first try. It took patience and experimentation to refine my prompts until I got the code I needed. Within that process, I discovered that different AIs excelled at specific tasks, so I would switch between chats to tackle various requirements. One AI, which I jokingly referred to as my "CTO," wasn't ideal for implementing actual code but excelled at providing high-level architectural guidance. Others acted as my "developer team," with a "senior programmer" handling complex implementations and a "junior programmer" taking on straightforward tasks and version management on GitHub.

The only thing left for me to do was hit run on the code and see if it would actually compile—which it did not 90% of the time. This would lead me back to the CTO AI, complaining about the implementation of my junior dev AI and iterating from there until one of my three team members had the answer. This was a stark contrast to my early coding attempts, where I'd get frustrated and spend hours trying to solve minor issues.

Building with AI has been the opposite. I hardly ever had to spend more than a couple of hours trying to solve a problem, and those were the really hard ones like fixing state changes or making API calls. Usually, most things could be solved within 20 to 30 minutes, often faster.

It's a bit of a joke, but I think the hardest part of building an iOS app has been the process of getting it onto the App Store, which I successfully procrastinated for an entire month before finally getting it approved. Of course, AI doesn't solve the problem of monetization. Being able to build whatever crosses my mind doesn't necessarily translate into a profitable business, which is an entirely different beast and would likely require more than just prompting an AI.

However, my big takeaway from this exercise is that with the advent of AI, building an app is no longer the gated opportunity it once was. It requires patience, but it's not impossible, especially as most of the answers have become easily accessible.

If I attempted to build a super complex SaaS product, I would likely run into problems quickly. But just building something for oneself, experimenting with ideas, and exploring new use cases and businesses has become available to everyone. I am excited about what this means for the landscape of app and product development, the ideas people will bring to life, and the new businesses that will eventually grow from this.

  • Is artificial intelligence making big tech too big?

Previous scares have been overblown. This one might not be

make it big app

Your browser does not support the <audio> element.

W hen ChatGPT took everyone by storm in November 2022, it was Open AI , the startup behind it, that seized the business world’s attention. But, as usual, big tech is back on the front foot. Nvidia , maker of accelerator chips that are at the core of generative artificial intelligence ( AI ), is duelling with Microsoft, a tech giant of longer standing, to be the world’s most valuable company. Like Microsoft, it is investing in a diverse ecosystem of startups that it hopes will strengthen its lead. Predictably, given the “techlash” mindset of the regulatory authorities, both firms are high on the watch list of antitrust agencies.

Don’t roll your eyes. The trustbusters may have infamously overreached in recent years in their attempts to cut big firms down to size. Yet for years big-tech incumbents in Silicon Valley and elsewhere have shown just as infamous a tendency to strut imperiously across their digital domains. What is intriguing is the speed at which the antitrust authorities are operating. Historically, such investigations have tended to be labyrinthine. It took 40 years for the Supreme Court to order E.I. Du Pont de Nemours, a large American chemical firm, to divest its anticompetitive stake in General Motors, which it first started to acquire in 1917 when GM was a fledgling carmaker. The Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ), an American antitrust agency, is still embroiled in a battle with Meta, a social-media giant, to unwind Facebook’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, done 12 and ten years ago, respectively.

This time, rather than waiting until deals are done and markets are stitched up, the preference is to be nimble. It is now the trustbusters who are trying to move fast and break things.

Broadly speaking, the authorities have two areas of concern. The first is whether the world’s biggest companies are trying to tie businesses into their products in anticompetitive ways. The second is about control: are some of the largest generative- AI investments poorly disguised acquisitions intended to sidestep antitrust consideration?

Nvidia faces scrutiny on the first count. It is under the gaze of America’s Department of Justice, which is understood to be examining allegations that it locks users of its graphics processing units ( GPU s) into its software, and that a scarcity of GPU s is the result of anticompetitive conduct. Nvidia declined to comment.

The attention on Microsoft is more over the second category. The FTC has launched a market inquiry of the software-provider’s $13bn investment in Open AI , which gives it a 49% share of the profits. It is also investigating Microsoft’s hiring in March of most of the staff of Inflection, a rival to Open AI (the most significant hire was Mustafa Suleyman, Inflection’s co-founder, who sits on the board of The Economist ’s parent company). Microsoft also declined to comment. The FTC has other big-tech firms under the spotlight, too. It is looking at investments by Alphabet and Amazon in Anthropic, another maker of large language models ( LLM s).

Inevitably, there is little public information concerning this antitrust scrutiny. Yet Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority, a regulatory agency that is also probing the two Microsoft deals, has recently published a study of LLM s (it refers to them by their alternative name, foundation models) that illustrates the main concerns. The biggest one, it says, is the potential role of a few tech giants to shape the market in anticompetitive ways. It notes that Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia have forged over 90 partnerships with LLM -makers since 2019, mostly by taking minority stakes. It expresses concerns that they may exert leverage on their partners through supply of critical inputs, such as computing power and data, as well as controlling access to consumers via their platforms. It also notes that some of the deals may have been structured to avoid merger scrutiny.

In America, the government’s concerns are similar. But the trustbusters are not just looking at LLM s. They have their eyes on the whole caboodle—from the GPUs at the bottom to consumer applications at the top of the generative- AI “stack”. The FTC ’s investigation of Microsoft’s Inflection deal is yet another type. The agency is probing whether Microsoft failed to supply the correct merger paperwork when it hired most of Inflection’s employees and paid for a non-exclusive licence to its technology. In other words, it suspects it was an acquisition in disguise aimed at avoiding an antitrust review. For Microsoft, it was not an acquisition at all. What is left of Inflection remains an independent company.

This is all tricky terrain. Building LLM s is capital-intensive, like drilling for oil. The requirements for computing power, digital information and human expertise are such that model-builders justifiably turn to tech giants for support. Big tech has the balance-sheets, data and cloud infrastructure to help, as well as providing a seal of approval. Moreover, it is hard to assert that a tech giant has an exclusive hold over any generative- AI startup when so much polyamory is taking place. Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s boss, once declared with regard to Open AI that his firm was “below them, above them, around them”. That sounded suspiciously like monogamy. When Open AI recently announced a partnership with Apple, a Microsoft rival, Mr Nadella was reportedly miffed.

The other type of competition

It is tough political territory as well. If intervention is too heavy-handed, China hawks will accuse the trustbusters of suffocating American innovation in favour of its strategic rival. Yet there is room, at the very least, for a light touch. Generative AI will cause big technological upheaval, though in what ways is still unclear. If the incumbents are left to their own devices, they will surely use their imperial might to try to bend it to their advantage. Regulators have a duty to prevent them squashing competition. So, by all means move fast. Just don’t break things too badly. ■

Overall User Satisfaction Rating

20 make it big reviews, deaf user here - such a helpful app all these years but missing two stars....

Been using MakeItBig since maybe 2015? Extremely useful in communicating with people because of the large clear font size compared with using the Notes app. One issue I've always had that knocks off two whole stars no matter what: it's not as convenient to go back in my text input and edit like it is on the Notes app, messages, emails, or on any text-editing apps. Please fix this and change the tiny input bar into something much more comfortable like a note pad or enable the manipulation of the entire text screen itself. I hate having to do acrobatics with my thumb and the cursor, holding it against the left side of the input bar so it can haphazardly slide over the words and hopefully land to where I want it using the precision of a toddler in stressful situations in front of hearing people already bewildered and frustrated by *their own inability and intolerance* in communicating with a Deaf person.

By TheWalkingDeaf

Amazing for the Deaf!

As a Deaf person, I use MakeItBig everyday. Literally. I can’t begin to tell you how much this has changed my life in the last 8 years, when I had lunch with a Deaf friend when visiting Washington DC and he showed me MakeItBig. It makes it super easy to write out my orders, and I take advantage of the speech-to-text feature when attempting to communicate with others especially during the pandemic. One big thing on my wish list for MakeItBig is to be able to “favorite” my most used messages so that I can quickly pull them up from a short list - like my daily coffee order. 😜 Thank you!

By Creed428

Great tool to use when working with someone hard of hearing or deaf

I work with seniors and a lot of them are both hard of hearing and have bad vision so MakeItBig lets me communicate with them easier by just typing what I am saying and have them read it. The only negative thing is if you are typing something longer than maybe 8-10 words the text gets smaller and smaller I wish it would stay the big text but just let me scroll up and down with big text

Incredibly useful app

My grandmother is very hard of hearing. When she can’t understand someone, it’s very frustrating and frequently upsetting for her. It’s gotten much worse since the rise of mask usage during Covid. She can no longer augment the pieces she actually can hear with lip-reading. MakeItBig allows me to communicate effectively with her. It’s also great if you lose your voice or have a sleeping baby around.

By Robert Tee

MakeItBig serves as an excellent assistive device for someone who cannot speak. Whether on phone or iPad, can be held up for all in a group to see at once, facilitating communication. I do have a suggestion which might be helpful in some settings, the typed words should optionally also speak aloud. Perhaps offering several voices from which to choose. Excellent helpful app as it stands, though.

By Siempreconamor

Couldn’t be any more perfect!

I have various videoconferencing meetings during the week because of the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. Some of the people I have to deal with are older ones who don’t hear very well. I just type out what they need to know and hold it up to the webcam so they can see it and everybody is happy. Thanks to the developer for his generousity in making this helpful app available.

Does what it’s meant to

It works. It’s simple. It doesn’t need unnecessary features to weigh it down. It’s perfect as is. Thank you for keeping this simple to use version available. Anyone can see the advantage of being able to quickly edit a short message (word or two) to show your brother across the room at Thanksgiving before mom brings in the burnt sweet potato’s.

By Grabvision

Useful communicative tool for someone like me

As a Deaf person, communication has been an issue for me. Now with MakeItBig, I’m able to communicate with anyone, especially to make a better impression. Very compatible with shortcuts so I can type faster and make the result to make anyone comfortable than to write on the paper or to type with small fonts! Quite useful app! UPDATE: New feature on top right corner is being more annoyed for me. Whenever I typed “x” to clear, I kept ending up going to history, which I rarely use. Also, I would suggest to move this feature to left and possibly to have the choice to save specific messages that will be used than saving everything because I communicate with people and I ended up having long list of useless messages I typed. Thanks for listening!

RN Home Health Utilization

After visiting a few home health senior citizens, many of whom have impaired hearing, I found facilities to lack communication boards or simple whiteboards to effectively deliver care but rather look toward amplifying voice volume directly into the impaired ears. Naturally, we seek for lip movement to depict word translation into our cranial lobes. The BIG app has sped up communication between my patients to ease transmission of simple phrases and eliminate frustration between both parties.

Siri / Shortcuts integration

I asked the developer if there was an interface for Shortcuts. Within a few hours they responded with a handy Shortcut utilizing this app://?m= I can now dictate a message by invoking a Shortcut via Siri. This will be very useful when I need to inform other drivers that they have a flat tire or other issues. Much safer than trying to type while driving.

i really do love this app

it’s simplistic & amazing to communicate w Hearing people. honestly, it makes my life so much easier. even though it is big (haha), low vision/blind people have a hard time reading this sometimes, so it’d be great to have a reader feature along w the big text. there are other apps that do that but it would be nice to not switch between multiple. MakeItBig is perfect in every other regard.

By doogietunes

I love this app.

MakeItBig is one of my favorite ways to communicate with friends and lovers when verbal communication doesn’t work. Concerts are a great use case. I am glad to see this week’s update with iOS 11 and iPhone X support. I was wondering about MakeItBig ’s future because the last update had been three years ago. But now, I have new hope I will be making it big for years to come.

Does what it says. It’s not often an app meets all my expectations, even when it’s ridiculously simple. BIG makes text fill the whole screen, simply and without frustration. Working in healthcare and often interacting with individuals who are hard of hearing, MakeItBig allows me to easily convey a message in large type without fidgeting with settings or keyboards. Keep it simple!

Broke my jaw - this made it so much easier

I had downloaded MakeItBig just to flash silly messages at friends but recently got in an accident and broke my jaw and can't talk while it's healing. MakeItBig has made it so much easier to communicate with cashiers, waiters, bartenders, friends, flight attendants, basically anyone I come in contact with I talk to via MakeItBig. It's been incredibly helpful.

Great for CNAs and visiting nurses in the age of COVID

MakeItBig has become even more useful with the advent of Covid. Nurses and caregivers have to wear a mask all the time and seniors who used to read lips now can’t understand. It also helps when the user has an accent that the senior has trouble understanding. MakeItBig does speech to text very well, so you’re able to have a decent real time conversation. The only thing I would add would be a “timer” mode when using the microphone to automatically cancel the visible keyboard a second or two after the user stops speaking. I’ve been using MakeItBig for over a year, and it is a real help. Thank you!

By broliclobster

Good for deaf and hard of hearing

I use MakeItBig to communicate with my grandfather who is 92 and almost totally deaf. My only suggestion would be to make it even easier for elderly people to learn how to use- make a custom keyboard with a big button for the talk-to-text feature, and a big delete button.

I never write reviews for apps but this is a lifesaver. I’m very social and like to go out to bars/clubs etc, but the music is always so loud I find myself having convos with people via my Notes app. This is so much more convenient. I’m going to a music festival this weekend and KNOW I will be using this a ton. Thank you to whoever developed this.

By portalkeeper

So happy this got an update

This is the classic app that you had no idea you needed or even wanted, but once you have it, you use it ALL THE TIME. The classic situation for me is communicating silently with people in the room when there’s a phone call going on. Doesn’t that happen WAY MORE OFTEN than you’d think? That’s what MakeItBig is for. Get it. Use it.

By jangoagogo

Just a really nice app.

Want to display a big word on your screen and show (literally) nothing else but the word? This is perfect. MakeItBig Store lacks a lot of basic, clean tools, but this is a perfect example of an app that serves one purpose but does so very well. Clean design with extensive options for customization. Not filled with a bunch of pointless buttons or things that make the UI look like crap. I use MakeItBig to help with writing complex Japanese characters so I can have something to refer to that I don’t have to squint at. But I can imagine all kinds of nice uses for this. Well done.

By Dalmoodle

Great for Deaf people

I am a deaf person and MakeItBig is very convenient when I need to communicate with someone who can’t sign. So much easier than typing it out in my notes and having to have them squint to see what it says. I mainly use it to either inform people I am deaf, or asking a store clerk to help find something 😊

Budgeting looks different for everyone, so we selected four picks for budgeting apps. We selected a well-rounded budgeting app, one designed for couples, another that's appealing for setting goals, and lastly one with more detailed budgeting features.

We have a mix of free budgeting apps and ones that have premium plans with subscription fees, so you can choose an option based on your financial needs and priorities.

Best Overall: Rocket Money

Rocket Money (previously known as TrueBill) is our best budgeting app overall because it has a variety of tools to help you save and limit spending.

Rocket Money has both a free plan and a premium plan. With the free plan, you'll be able to link bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts to track spending and you'll also be able to create a budget .

The premium plan includes concierge services, which review your bills and subscriptions to help you cancel or get refunds for these services on your behalf. It also includes premium customer chat, unlimited budgets, customizable budget categories, a savings account, real-time updated syncing, and a credit score report.

The app's standout feature is Bill Negotiation. You'll upload a copy of your bill, and Rocket Money will determine whether you can get the same service with the company for a lower price. Rocket Money may also help you get refunds if you're charged bank overdraft fees or late fees.

When Rocket Money negotiates a bill, you'll have to pay a percentage (you may choose any amount from 30% to 60%) of whatever it will save you for the year. If you plan to change your internet, cable, phone, or wireless provider in the next year, you could end up losing money, though.

Pricing: You may choose how much to pay each month through a sliding scale. Rocket Money has a free plan that's $0. The Premium plan has a 7-day free trial; after the free trial, you'll have to pay around $6 to $12 per month (the lower-price plans are billed annually instead of monthly).

Introduction to Budgeting Apps

Why use a budgeting app.

A budgeting app can help you understand where you spend your money. It's also useful for building and maintaining an effective budget.

The top budgeting apps let you create a monthly budget using customizable categories.

Many also help you save money effectively . For example, budgeting apps use your transaction history to make charts and graphs. You can use this information to analyze your spending patterns and figure out where to make adjustments in your budget.

Key Benefits of Budgeting Apps

The primary benefit of using a budgeting app is that it gives you a big-picture view of your financial situation.

Many budgeting apps let you link different types of bank accounts, investment accounts, credit cards , and loans. You'll be able to see all your accounts in one place and see how you're spending versus saving.

Budgeting apps also help you build better money habits. If you've struggled to maintain a budget in the past, it might be easier to track your spending on an app than completely on your own. Budgeting apps do the work for you by syncing all your accounts — you just need to make sure everything is synced correctly and make small adjustments when they aren't.

Features to Look for in a Budgeting App

User-friendly interface.

A good budgeting app has a design format that's easy to use. The app should load quickly and make it easy to get started. You should be able to create a budget on your own without much help. If you encounter technical difficulties, you should also easily be able to contact a customer representative through the app.

Syncing with Bank Account

Many easy-to-use budgeting apps for beginners allow you to sync savings accounts, checking accounts , investment accounts, or credit cards.

Apps often use Plaid to link bank accounts. Plaid can connect more than 11,000 U.S. banks and credit unions, including the best banks .

Expense Tracking

Once bank accounts are linked, your spending will be updated on the app so you have up-to-date information. A strong budgeting app will provide updates frequently, and during the same day so you can stay on top of your budget.

Customizable Budgeting Categories

Many budgeting apps allow you to create a zero-balance budget. With a zero-balance budget, you're figuring out where every dollar of your income is going. You can create budget categories for every expense. You can also create savings goals if you're setting aside money for a specific purpose, like a down payment on a home or a future vacation.

A good budgeting app allows you to make customizable budgeting categories rather than pre-set categories. That way, you can make a budget that's tailored to your life and make categories as broad or specific as you want.

Charts and Visual Analysis Features

A top budgeting app analyzes your habits so you can see how you manage your money over time. Some apps provide charts of your monthly budget so you can see how your categories compare to one another. Others might have visuals to indicate how much money you have left to spend in a certain category for that month.

Several budgeting apps also provide reports for broader areas of your finances. For example, you might be able to view your cash flow balance over several months or how your money in your retirement plans has grown over time.

How to Choose the Best Budgeting App for You

To find the right budgeting app, you need to know what features you're looking for. Are you looking for ways to cut back on spending? Do you want a free plan or a subscription plan for your budgeting app? Do you want a detailed breakdown of your finances or more of a general overview? Knowing the answers to these questions can help narrow down your options.

If you have your eye on a few budgeting apps, you can try out the free trials or free versions of each before settling on the right one. That way, you can see if the interface is also user-friendly and manageable for the long-term.

Setting Up and Using a Budgeting App

Step-by-step guide to setting up your budgeting app.

To use a budgeting app, you'll have to download it through the Android or Apple store. To set up most budgeting apps, you'll enter your name and email address. If the app charges a subscription fee, it will prompt you to sign up for a plan or free trial.

The best budgeting apps will walk you through the app's different features and help you get started. You'll typically be prompted to link accounts. Then, you can create a budget or set savings goals.

Tips for Effective Budgeting with the Apps

If you're new to budgeting apps, it may be helpful to start off with some structure.

For example, you could use a popular savings method like the 50/30/20 rule or pay-yourself-first strategy.

The 50/30/20 rule breaks down your budgeting, so 50% goes to needs, 30% goes to wants, and 20% goes to debt or savings. The pay-yourself-first strategy focuses on savings — you'll automatically transfer money from your paycheck to some of your savings and then distribute what's left over to your expenses.

Another tip for effective budgeting is to look at your expenses to see if they reflect your financial goals and values. If you have certain goals that are of higher priority than others, find ways to reduce spending in categories that aren't a priority for you. That might mean waiting before making a purchase, creating a meal plan or grocery list to limit spending on food, or auditing your subscriptions to see if there are any you can cancel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Budgeting Apps

Experts recommend trying out a budgeting app's free plan or free trial before committing to an annual plan.

There are many budgeting apps out there, so you want to try to find the one that best aligns with your financial needs. Testing a few apps can help you decide the best one, and it also keeps you from paying too much for a budgeting app that you won't end up using.

Pros and Cons of Budgeting Apps

ProsCons

Alternatives to Budgeting Apps

Budgeting apps vs. spreadsheet or diy budgeting methods.

You may prefer building a spreadsheet budget if you don't want to link all of your bank accounts or credit cards in a mobile app. However, setting up and maintaining your budget will primarily hinge on how much work you're willing to put into it.

A budgeting app does the tracking for you. With a spreadsheet, you'll have to either start from scratch or use a template. Either way, a budgeting app still offers more comprehensive features.

Budgeting Apps vs. Personal Finance Software

Budgeting apps and personal finance software share the same features. The best option for you will depend on whether you have preferences on the tool's accessibility.

A budgeting app is primarily designed for mobile experiences. Some apps also have an online dashboard which you can access through your computer, but it is always something that's offered.

Meanwhile, personal finance software is designed for computer access. You'll either download the software to a desktop or use an online platform. Some will also have apps, but some features might not be available.

Budgeting Apps vs. Savings Accounts with Goals Features

Some of the best online banks have added unique features to their savings accounts to help customers with goal-setting.

If you're specifically looking for a way to save for goals, it may benefit you to get a savings account with buckets . Buckets are customizable tools that separate your savings so you can save for specific goals. Since they are an integrated bank account feature, they also might be easier to manage than a budgeting app.

If you would rather have more robust budgeting tools, a budgeting app will likely still stand out to you. Budgeting apps also connect investment accounts, credit cards, and loans, so you'll be able to see everything in one place.

Budgeting App FAQs

A budgeting app is beneficial for tracking expenses and sticking to a budget. It can also help you save for financial goals and prevent lifestyle creep .

To choose the best budgeting app for your needs, consider what your financial goals are and how a budgeting app can best help you achieve them. If you need help cutting back on expenses, you might consider a budgeting app with bill negotiation features. If you need help with savings, you might prioritize an app that helps with goal-setting features.

Most budgeting apps have encryption to store data, making them secure to use if you're linking your accounts. To keep your username and password safe, budgeting apps might also have multi-factor authentication so they can verify your identity when you're logging in.

A budgeting app can help you understand your financial situation so you can create a budget that saves you money over time. These apps can help you find areas where you can reduce your spending. Some also offer a bill negotiation feature so you can see if you can save money on subscriptions.

Yes, there are free budgeting apps available in the Apple and Android stores, though they typically have more limited features than apps with paid subscriptions. The best free budgeting app is Honeydue, which is specifically for couples.

Mint shut down in March 2024. You'll have to switch to Credit Karma if you want to continue using an Intuit personal finance platform, or you can switch to an alternative budgeting app.

In most cases, the best budgeting app for beginners will be one that makes budgeting easy — this means it has an easy-to-use interface and links to your accounts, so you don't have to enter every transaction manually. It can also be good to have an app that teaches you about money.

Rocket Money is our best budgeting app overall, and it has a free plan. If you're in a couple, our top pick is Honeydue which is also free to download.

Why You Should Trust Us: Experts' Advice on the Best Budgeting Apps

We consulted banking and financial planning experts to inform these picks and provide their advice on finding the budgeting app for your needs.

  • Sophia Acevedo, banking editor, Business Insider
  • Mykail James, MBA, certified financial education instructor, BoujieBudgets.com

Here's what they had to say about budgeting apps. (Some text may be lightly edited for clarity.)

What should I look for in a budgeting app?

Mykail James, MBA, certified financial education instructor, BoujieBudgets.com :

"My best tip for people who are looking to start using a budgeting app is to figure out what you're missing in your financial system. For example, if you are a person who knows that you want to stick to a zero-based budget, and you've been doing that manually, but you need maybe a little bit more help with the organization, then you can center your focus on searching for apps specifically solve your problem."

Sophia Acevedo, banking editor, Business Insider :

"I would look for features that would help me with my goals. Like if I'm trying to curb spending, I would look for a budgeting app that helps me minimize payments in certain spending areas."

How do I know if a budgeting app is right for me?

Mykail James, MBA, CFEI:

"Give it time. Every budgeting app is going to feel uncomfortable during the first month. Give it at least three months before deciding if it's not something for you. Actively try and use it before considering a switch."

Sophia Acevedo, CEPF:

"I would first try out the free version and see how it works. Some budgeting apps are entirely free, while others have different plans or trials at a variety of price points."

Methodology: How Did We Choose the Best Budgeting Apps?

At Business Insider, we aim to help smart people make the best decisions with their money. We understand that "best" is often subjective, so in addition to highlighting the clear benefits of a financial product, we outline the limitations, too.

First, we compiled a list of 18 popular budgeting apps available in both the Google Play Store and Apple Store.

Then, we reviewed each budgeting app for a week. To determine our top picks, we reviewed the initial sign-up process, pricing, budgeting tools, and user experience. We also considered whether each app accomplished everything it advertised, and how regular users reviewed the product on the Apple and Google Play store.
