8 Effective Solutions to Fix Vibration Not Working on Android

If you rely on your phone's vibration to alert you of calls, messages, and notifications, it can be frustrating when your Android phone fails to vibrate. If you've been scratching your head trying to figure out why your Android phone isn't vibrating, this guide will walk you through all the possible solutions to fix the issue. Let's dive in!

1. Check Vibration Settings

Start by checking the vibration settings on your Android phone. Open the Settings app and navigate to Sound. Tap on Vibrate for calls and select Always vibrate. Make sure your preferred vibration settings are enabled under Other Sounds and Vibrations.

2. Check Accessibility Settings

In addition to the sound settings, you'll also need to check the Accessibility menu on your Android phone. Open the Settings app and go to Accessibility. Under Interaction Controls, tap on Vibration & haptic strength and ensure that your preferred vibration settings are enabled.

3. Modify Vibration Intensity

If your Android phone is still not vibrating despite enabling the right settings, it's possible that the vibration intensity is too low. Open the Settings app and navigate to Sound and vibration > Vibration intensity. Use the sliders to increase vibration intensity for Incoming calls, Notifications, and Touch interaction.

4. Test Vibration Motor

If your Android phone still doesn't vibrate, the issue could be hardware-related. To eliminate this possibility, you'll need to test your phone's vibration motor. Open the dialer app on your phone and dial #0 # to visit the service menu. Tap on the Vibration tile, and your phone should start vibrating immediately. If your phone doesn't offer the secret service menu, you can install an app like Vibration-Test from the Play Store to check your phone's vibration motor.

5. Reset App Preferences

If you've recently modified app permissions, applied restrictions, or disabled system apps, it could affect your Android phone's vibration. To fix this, try resetting app preferences on your phone. Launch the Settings app and go to System > Reset options. Tap Reset app preference and confirm the reset.

6. Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a useful tool for diagnosing problems with Android phones. If the vibration is not working due to an app running in the background, booting your phone in Safe Mode will help verify that. To boot your Android in Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until a menu appears. Long press on the Restart option and select OK when prompted. If the vibration works in Safe Mode, you'll need to look for recently installed apps on your phone and remove them.

7. Install Software Update

If the vibration not working issue started after a recent Android update, check for any pending updates and install them. Your phone's manufacturer might release a fix that resolves the problem.

8. Factory Reset Android

If none of the above solutions work, the last resort is to reset your Android phone to its factory default settings. Keep in mind that this process will erase all data on your phone and restore it to its original settings. Open the Settings app, go to System > Reset options. Select the Erase all data (factory reset) option and tap Erase all data at the bottom.

Vibration is an essential form of feedback that helps you stay informed about calls, texts, and touch inputs. Hopefully, by following the solutions mentioned above, you can get your Android phone vibrating again and restore things to normal.

Does Your Android Phone Vibrate for No Reason? Here's What Causes It

Here's Why I Canceled My PS Plus Subscription

You'll never use gmail the same way after applying these 5 gemini tricks, youtube music added song recognition, and i'm ditching shazam.

Buzz. You glance at your Android phone as the screen lights up, expecting a message or a notification, but nothing. It seems your phone has just vibrated for no reason, and no, it's not a phantom vibration either because you didn't imagine it.

Don't worry; you're not losing your mind or anything. Android phones sometimes act out this way, often for several reasons. Let's take a closer look.

1. Vibration for App Notifications

Some problematic apps can still trigger vibrations even with your app notifications turned off, making it hard to pinpoint the culprit.

Identify the apps you installed recently and disable all notifications in their notification settings to solve this. Go to Settings > Notifications > See All Apps , select any app you suspect might be causing the random vibration, and toggle off all notification categories.

Screenshot of Notification Settings on Android

You can also clear their cache and data or restart your Android device if the vibrations are due to background apps running unchecked.

2. Touch Feedback

You might have accidentally turned on your phone's haptic feedback, causing any random touch on your screen or keypad to go all abuzz.

It can be startling, especially when you cannot recollect ever turning on touch feedback, and now it seems your phone is vibrating for no reason. You can turn off vibrations from touch interactions or inadvertent touch in settings.

Just go to Settings > Sound and vibration and toggle off all vibration settings. You'll find them under System Sound/Vibration Control on a Samsung phone.

Screenshot of Settings on Android Phone

Similarly, there's a feature on some Samsung phones called Smart Alert, which when activated, causes your phone to vibrate when you pick it up if you missed a call or message. Go to Settings > Advanced Features > Motions and Gestures and toggle off Smart Alert .

Screenshot of Advanced Features Settings on Android

3. Bugs in the Operating System

Android is sometimes prone to having bugs pop up for the most random reasons. These bugs can cause all sorts of glitches—incoming calls might cause your phone to vibrate without lighting up the screen, for example, or there could be vibrations for no reason at all.

Updating your Android software can help eliminate a lot of these bugs, and will often have performance enhancements that help too.

If your phone software is up-to-date, and you have a random vibration problem, a simple restart might be all your phone needs to normalize it. If that doesn't solve the issue, you may consider factory resetting your phone .

If you often install apps from untrusted locations, keep in mind that they might not always function as expected and may trigger random vibrations. Uninstall any apps you aren't sure about—and try to stick to the Play Store for downloading in the future.

4. Hardware Issues

Along with software glitches, continuous vibrations may indicate underlying hardware issues, like a faulty vibration motor. You could run a secret hardware diagnostic menu to test to see if anything is amiss with the motor that could be setting off the vibration. If you use a Samsung device, you can as well run a hardware diagnostic test via the Samsung Members app .

If any of the tests identify hardware issues as the source of your phone being vibration-happy, do not attempt to take it apart yourself. Instead, go to an authorized service center or find a trained technician to help ascertain and fix the problem. Luckily, your phone's warranty may cover this if this happens within your warranty period.

Silence The Buzz

Vibrations are useful for alerts and feedback, but it becomes worrying when your Android phone buzzes for no reason.

Pinpointing the cause should be relatively easy, and fixing it should be even easier. A little toggle here, a little cleaning there, and, if necessary, a once-over by a professional should be enough to silence the buzz.

However, if the issue is related to software or settings, you may be able to fix it yourself by following the steps outlined in the user manual or by searching online for a solution.

My phone’s vibrator is too weak, how can I increase its intensity?

Some phones allow you to adjust the intensity of the vibrator in the settings menu. If this option is not available, you may need to download a third-party app that can adjust the intensity of the vibrator. Be careful when using these apps, as they may cause additional issues with your phone.

This can be puzzling and can even be quite annoying if it happens continually. In the following article, we’ll discuss the possible causes of why your phone vibrates for no reason , along with some tips to help you fix the problem.

Why Does My Phone Vibrate for No Reason ?

The most common cause for your phone to vibrate for no reason is a system issue . However, this is due to a conflict between different software components or an error in the operating system.

Another possible cause of random vibrations is a rogue application installed on your device. Some apps are known to trigger unwanted vibrations, particularly those that rely heavily on notifications or background processes.

In some cases, buggy software updates can also lead to this issue. When developers release new patches or versions of apps. They sometimes introduce bugs that can affect your phone.

Some phantom vibrations do not come from technical problems. Instead, our brains fool us into believing we have felt our phones vibrate even when they haven’t.

1- Rogue application

One of the main reasons why your phone vibrates without any reason is due to a rogue application installed on your Android device. This cause could happen if you downloaded an application from an untrusted source or accidentally clicked on a malicious link.

Rogue apps can contain trojans, spyware, and viruses but also can cause a lot of issues including random vibrations without notifications. Also, these applications can consume a lot of battery power and slow down your phone’s performance.

First, uninstall any potentially malfunctioning applications. If the problem continues, use a malware scanner to identify and remove any suspicious files or viruses.

It is advisable to download applications only from reliable sources such as Google Play Store and take time to read reviews and examine ratings before installing any new applications on your phone.

2- System Glitches

These issues occur within the operating system of your phone and can cause unexpected behavior such as random vibrations.

The reason for these glitches could be outdated software, corrupted files, or even hardware issues. Unfortunately, identifying the exact cause can be tricky, and often requires some troubleshooting.

If you suspect that a system glitch is causing your phone to vibrate randomly without notification. One solution could be to restart your Android phone. This simple method will help clear any temporary data or cache that may have been causing the problem.

There are several steps you can try to resolve system glitches before resorting to more drastic measures like factory resetting your phone.

3- Buggy Software update

Another cause could be due to a buggy software update. When an updated version of your operating system has been released. It’s recommended that you install it immediately to ensure optimal performance and security. Yet, these updates can cause more harm than good.

A buggy app and software update can result in various issues including phone vibrating without notification. In some cases, the new operation system may not be compatible with certain apps or features on your phone causing them to malfunction.

If you suspect that the recent software update is causing your phone to vibrate without any reason. Consider rolling back the OS version or contacting technical support for assistance. Also, it’s necessary to keep in mind that bugs may not always appear immediately after installation but over time as you use different apps and settings on your phone.

When experiencing random vibrations on your phone. It’s essential to identify whether a faulty app or system-level glitch could be responsible before considering hardware damage as an option.

Factory Reset your Device - 655654

Once you initiate the process of resetting your Android phone. Make sure you do not interrupt it in any way as this could cause further damage to the operating system. Once completed successfully re-install needed applications or transfer necessary files from the backup.

While a factory reset may seem daunting at first glance due to losing everything stored on the device. Sometimes starting afresh with a clean slate is what’s required when dealing with persisting problems such as Android phone vibrate not working issue.

Method 7: Fix System Issues

System issues can sometimes be the root cause of why your phone randomly vibrates but there’s nothing there. These underlying problems may not be immediately noticeable, but they can manifest in various ways, including phantom vibrations.

One way to fix system issues is by clearing the device’s cache partition . This process involves wiping out temporary files and data that may have accumulated over time and could be causing conflicts with other apps or processes. To clear your cache partition, simply access your phone’s recovery mode and select “wipe cache partition.”

If none of these solutions work, contacting technical support or bringing the device into a repair store might be necessary as there could potentially be deeper underlying hardware issues causing the problem.

Method 8: Close All Open Apps

By following the tips and tricks mentioned above. You should be able to fix your Android phone vibrating problem for no reason. However, if none of these solutions work for you. Then there may be a hardware issue that requires professional attention.

One final thing to try is to close all open apps on your phone . Sometimes background applications can cause unexpected vibrations or other glitches in your device’s software. By closing them all down, you reset the system and hopefully solve any issues that were causing your phone to vibrate randomly.

Close All Open Apps

It’s important not to panic when experiencing strange phone behavior like random vibrations. Instead, take a step back and think about what cause the issue before trying out different steps one by one. You will find a solution that works for you with patience and persistence, even though some problems are more complex than others.

For New Ideas, Think Inside (This) Box

June 25, 2024 • 7 min read.

In this Nano Tool for Leaders, Penn's David Resnick offers guidance on using helpful constraints to unlock new solutions to old problems.

3d rendering of a bright lightbulb coming out of a box

Nano Tools for Leaders®   —  a collaboration between  Wharton Executive Education  and  Wharton’s Center for Leadership and Change Management  — are fast, effective tools that you can learn and start using in less than 15 minutes, with the potential to significantly impact your success and the engagement and productivity of the people you lead.

Harness constraints and analogies to unlock new solutions to old problems.

Traditional brainstorming,  as coined by Alex Osborne in the 1950s, asks participants to consider any and all ideas that might solve a problem. While blue-sky, no-limits thinking has several benefits, the drawback is that leaders often, paradoxically, get stuck. They encounter challenges like the “curse of the blank page,” not knowing where to start because they can start anywhere. They may also face the “ Einstellung effect ,” a phenomenon whereby the easy recollection of familiar solutions can block their ability to think of new ones.

This has led some to (erroneously) believe that generating solutions is best left to people who are naturally creative. The good news is that there are tools that can help one become much better at generating new ideas. The even better news is that using these tools does not involve extensive training or attending workshops. In fact, one tool developed at Penn Medicine’s Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation is a simple  card game , and the “secret sauce” it teaches is how to leverage constraints and analogies. The  Accelerators in Innovation  game has teams of players use accelerator cards to create new kinds of solutions with questions such as “How would you solve postpartum depression if you operated like IKEA?” and “How might you tackle long emergency room wait times if you were Warren Buffet?” The solutions are then applied to problems presented on challenge cards while trying to avoid monkey wrenches from their opponents. After rapid-fire pitches, the judge determines each round’s winner.

Action Steps

1. make sure you are solving a problem..

Don’t solve for how to implement a solution. A classic example involved a design team brought in to figure out how to increase access to incubators. The issue is that the solution was already baked in (increase access to incubators). The team spent some time reframing the problem to focus on the true issue: ensuring that newborns are kept at a safe temperature, especially when delivery occurs in places with little or no access to electricity. Reframing to focus on the actual problem opened the team to entirely different solutions.

2. Leverage analogies.

Having to pull ideas out of thin air can be difficult and stressful. Analogies force us to consider other options or perspectives we may never have thought of, or thought of and dismissed. They cause us to ask ourselves “What is good about this other solution and how might it be applied to solving the problem I’m facing?” Examples include:

Think about successful companies and how their strengths could be applied to your problem. For example, IKEA is phenomenal at clearly explaining to people with limited background knowledge and literacy how to do something. So how might IKEA go about explaining post-op care to knee replacement patients?

Similarly, try using personas. Mary Poppins is renowned for making an unpleasant experience a delightful one. Mr. Rogers is known for his commitment to leveraging the kindness of neighbors. Darth Vader’s approach to getting things done is a ruthless level punishment for those who fail. Regardless of whom you choose, you can use the strengths or philosophies of these characters to inspire ideas. How might Mary Poppins improve adherence to physical therapy regimens? How might Darth Vader?

3. Leverage constraints.

Constraints are, unintuitively, another great way to force new thinking. Some options are:

How might you solve a problem if you were forced to delete a crucial (but perhaps onerous or costly) step of the process? Great examples are “How might tollbooths collect fees without a human there to do it?” (FastPass) or “How might people get their rental car if there was no line to wait in?” (Hertz Gold).

Design for extremes

How might you solve the problem if you had to solve for extreme use cases or extreme targets? For example, what would it take to screen 100 percent of eligible patients for colon cancer? How might you reduce civilian traffic fatalities to zero?

Real-world issues

Apply real-world constraints that have thrown a monkey wrench in your plans for past ideas. For example, how might you create a new marketing campaign that must be successful for consumers who do not speak English? How might you build a new product to launch on time even if multiple team members take a sabbatical or parental leave?

Focus on solving for how to make your solution delightful to users. This isn’t about making something silly or fun. It’s about surprising your users in a manner that unexpectedly accomplishes something for them.

4. Push for volume.

An additional benefit to Penn Medicine’s  Accelerators  card game is that it encourages multiple rounds to hear multiple ideas. When thinking of solutions, push for volume in your initial rounds. You’ll soon “use up” the ideas that come to mind easily and be forced to consider more creative or audacious alternatives.

5. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Another key component of generating ideas while playing a game is that it allows for laughter and a sense of play. This mindset can foster creativity and an atmosphere of psychological safety for sharing ideas.

How One Leader Uses It

Rebecca Trotta, PhD, director of the Center for Nursing Excellence at Penn, leveraged this tool in developing a new program to support older adults after hospitalization. Her challenge was to build a service that could provide intensive at-home support. Despite an existing evidence-based protocol, there was concern that patient acceptance of this support would be low. Many folks are simply exhausted after being in the hospital and don’t want someone in their home. Using the constraint of solving for “delight,” Trotta and her team came up with the idea of delivering home meals to these patients and their caregivers.

While it might appear as a frivolous and seemingly useless expense, it turned out that after spending days (and sometimes weeks) in the hospital, patients came home to fridges that were empty or full of spoiled food. Providing them with a meal ensured they had adequate nutrition. More importantly, though, the meals showed a sense of caring and thoughtfulness that went well beyond patients’ expectations. It built a strong sense of trust that paid dividends in drastically increasing the acceptance of home services compared to baseline.

Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft's AI could potentially revive Windows Phone by addressing the app gap, reimaging Live Tiles, and assisting developers.
  • AI-powered Live Tiles could work as app replacements, offering a more efficient way to utilize AI capabilities compared to a grid of app icons.
  • Microsoft's AI can help developers port their apps to Windows Phone by optimizing an AI model to translate existing Android or iOS code to Windows Phone code.

Windows Phone failed to compete with Android and iOS and was ultimately discontinued. Most people believe this is because Microsoft entered the smartphone race too late—but what if they were too early?

AI-powered smart devices are all the rage right now, and I strongly believe that Microsoft's cutting-edge AI could revive Windows Phone and give it a fighting chance.

Why Did Windows Phone Fail and Get Discontinued?

Many issues plagued Windows Phone, from its execution to reception, but the most important reason behind its demise was the severe lack of apps. You didn’t have a native app for YouTube, Gmail, Snapchat, and many more, which made Windows Phone impractical for most people.

A Nokia Lumia phone running Windows mobile OS.

Microsoft's late entry into the smartphone market didn't help either. By the time Windows Phone launched in 2010 , iOS (released in 2007) and Android (released in 2009) had already established a strong foothold. Redmond was playing catch-up from day one.

Moreover, unlike Apple, Microsoft didn't build its own hardware. Instead, it relied on other manufacturers to create Windows Phone devices while providing the software. This strategy mirrored Android's approach, but with a crucial difference—Android was free for manufacturers, giving it an economic advantage over Windows Phone, which required manufacturers to buy a license .

The slow start and being a paid OS meant Microsoft had an uphill battle trying to sway smartphone users already vested in the Apple or Android. This eventually led to a vicious cycle in which the lack of users made developers hesitant to create apps, which in turn discouraged users from adopting Windows Phone.

Windows Phone Still Had Its Fans

Despite these challenges, Windows Phone carved out a special place in the hearts of many, especially Nokia Lumia owners—myself included. The platform's innovative live tiles, unique designs, and cutting-edge camera hardware made it stand out in a sea of boring-looking smartphones and their monotonous icon grids .

Looking back on it now, yes, the app gap was a problem, but if you can forgive that, the Windows Phone platform had potential . Even Microsoft's current CEO, Satya Nadella, has expressed regret over the decision to discontinue Windows Phone in 2017.

Now, this doesn’t mean that Microsoft is currently planning to revive Windows Phone. But what if they were? Microsoft is all-in when it comes to integrating AI with their operating system , and I feel an AI smartphone would be the perfect way to breathe life back into Windows Phone and solve its core problems.

How Microsoft’s AI Can Solve Windows Phone's Biggest Problem

When we talk about Microsoft's AI, we're essentially referring to GPT-4o . Microsoft's deep partnership with OpenAI puts them at the forefront of AI technology. If you haven't seen GPT-4o in action, check out this demo:

However, we also have Microsoft's in-house AI models like Phi-3 . This is a lightweight AI model that can run locally on your device, which, in theory, means faster operations and increased privacy—all your data stays on your device and doesn't go to the cloud. Combining the fast Phi-3 with the efficient GPT-4o, you can significantly reduce the app gap in the Windows Phone ecosystem and turn it into a desirable mobile operating system.

In my mind, resurrecting Windows Phone with AI would revolve around three key steps:

  • Integrate on-device AI to mitigate the app gap
  • Make live tiles proper app replacements
  • Help developers port their apps to Windows Phone

Let's dive into each of these steps to see how AI could transform Windows Phone into a cutting-edge, AI-first mobile operating system.

On-Device AI Could Help Mitigate the App Gap

Remember the Rabbit R1 and Humane Pin ? These AI-powered devices generated a lot of buzz but ultimately fell short—not because the idea was bad, but because the execution missed the mark. They promised features that could be handled by a digital assistant or app on your existing smartphone—or, in our case, a revived Windows Phone! By integrating AI at the OS level, Windows Phone could potentially achieve what Rabbit R1 and Humane Pin hoped.

For starters, this approach could effectively shrink the app gap as AI could do many of the tasks we currently use dedicated apps for. A multimodal AI could help you generate images, edit photos, create ringtones, and much more. It could also replace most of your productivity apps as it could transcribe voice notes into text , automatically format them, and easily retrieve them as per your needs.

However, the main power comes with API integration. We have already seen how this can work out with Custom GPTs , where you can access different apps from a chat interface and perform different actions with natural language. For example, in ChatGPT, you can use the Canva GPT to design logos, social media posts, etc. You can also book tickets using Kayak GPT , search the internet for up-to-date information using Bing integration, do complex math calculations using Wolfram Alpha GPT , and much more.

In fact, a similar concept AI phone is already in the works and was showcased at MWC 2024:

Granted, this concept phone here runs Android. Also, Apple is adding AI at the OS level to revamp the iPhone experience . And I know what you might be thinking—if Apple and Android can already do all the OS-level AI stuff, won't reviving Windows Phone lead to history repeating itself? Well, I don't think so, and my confidence stems from two words—Live Tiles.

AI-Powered Live Tiles Could Work as App Replacements

Live Tiles introduced the innovative idea of combining apps, widgets, and notifications into a single entity. You could tap on a Live Tile to open the corresponding app or avoid entering the app altogether and just use its widget functionalities. Then there were notifications, where the Live Tiles automatically flipped and updated themselves with new information.

Now, with an OS-level AI in the picture, you could potentially create custom live tiles on the fly. AI is already powerful enough to let you create basic applications using simple text inputs. When you combine that with the previously discussed API access, you can potentially create custom live titles functioning as small applets on your home screen.

Not only does this help mitigate the app gap, but it can also be a huge accessibility improvement over the iOS and Android implementations. The custom live tiles with access to specific app APIs can display relevant information, and you can use interactive elements on the tile to interact with the API—similar to interactive widgets. Of course, the option to interact with the API using natural language will always be available by opening that particular Live Tile.

Another benefit I can imagine coming out of AI-powered live tiles would be what I'd like to call "Live Home Screens." Based on urgency or importance, AI could expand or shrink Live Tiles, making the entire home screen dynamic and alive. It could even reorganize tiles into different sections, ensuring you always see the most relevant information or tools first. Nothing—the company behind the Nothing Phone is exploring a similar concept. You can take a look at this demo video to get an idea of how they're planning to implement this feature:

As such, even with iOS and Android having OS-level AI integration, an AI-powered Windows Phone will still have an advantage because Live Tiles offer a more efficient way to utilize AI capabilities compared to a simple grid of app icons.

Help Developers Port Their Apps to Windows Phone

By now, we've discussed how AI and APIs could potentially substitute or bypass the need for many apps. However, it's important to recognize that there are two types of apps:

  • Apps that are merely interfaces connecting users to a service (like flight booking apps)
  • Apps that are the service or product themselves (like social media platforms or mobile games)

While the first type could potentially be replaced by AI-powered interfaces using APIs, the second type still requires native apps. That said, this is also an area where Microsoft's AI can help. We already have AI-powered coding assistants like GitHub's Copilot (which is a Microsoft product) that can write code snippets or help translate code written in one programming language to another. All Microsoft has to do is optimize a similar AI model, say "Windows Phone App Porting Assistant," and train it on the following:

  • Best practices for Windows Phone app development.
  • Writing code snippets tailored for the Windows Phone environment.
  • Translate existing Android (Java or Kotlin) code or iOS (Swift or Objective-C) code to Windows Phone (C, C++, C#) code, making ports as seamless as possible.

Granted, AI tools aren't this advanced yet and can't automatically port apps. However, they can certainly help developers translate code from one language to another, and create code snippets that can significantly reduce the time and effort needed to bring their apps to Windows Phone.

While Windows Phone's initial run ended in discontinuation, Microsoft's AI prowess could potentially revive it as a unique, AI-first mobile platform. By leveraging AI to address the app gap, reimagine Live Tiles, and assist developers, a new Windows Phone could offer a distinctive experience.

Bob Kuhn, Biotechnology Teacher at Fulton County School’s Innovation Academy, helps students study bee colonies.

Students Collect Data from Apiaries for Project-Based Learning

Adam Stone

Adam Stone writes on technology trends from Annapolis, Md., with a focus on government IT, military and first-responder technologies.

Nationwide, pollinators are in trouble. After years of steady decline, 2022 to 2023 marked a 37 percent loss of managed bee colonies in the United States, according to the nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership .

At Fulton County Schools’ Innovation Academy in Georgia, high school biotechnology teacher Bob Kuhn helps students in grades 10 through 12 to understand the bee situation. Students are charged with tagging and tracking bees as members of an after-school biotechnology research group called the DNA Club.

They work with “an apiary here on campus that has three hives, and at a city farm about three miles away that also has an apiary, the city of Alpharetta’s Old Rucker Farm,” Kuhn says.

As a project-based, career pathway high school, FCS students use hands-on science, technology, engineering and math projects to master certain subjects. It’s one of several bee-related science projects nationwide that rely on technology to help students build STEM skills as they conduct fieldwork.

Students Embrace a Range of Technologies for Their STEM Projects

For the FCS project, Kuhn takes advantage of readily available radio-frequency identification technology . This is the same technology Amazon uses to keep track of products in its warehouses.

“We are using a miniature RFID tag that you can physically glue to the back of the bee. It’s so small you have to use tweezers to place it,” he says. “We collect bees from the hive, then the students attach the tags with super glue on the back of their bodies and put them back into the hive.”

With the trackers in place, “we can measure how much time they’re spending outside of the hive on trips and how much time they’re spending inside the hive, when they’re not making trips,” he says. “There’s a lot of data that can be collected.”

RELATED: Modern data management platforms track student attainment.

All of that data is uploaded into a Microsoft Excel file, and students are learning to code with Python to make that data available for analysis. That information will paint a picture of bee behaviors — how far they have to go for food, for example — which helps students understand the impact of homebuilding, artificial landscapes and other effects of suburban development.

In Pennsylvania’s California Area School District , Superintendent Laura Jacob has fostered a similar effort. The district has four beehives on campus, managed by an after-school club.

“I grew up on a farm, and I know the critical need for bees in our food ecosystem, so I wanted to teach kids the benefits of bees,” Jacob says. “We go up to the beehives, we take care of the bees, and we also harvest the honey. We make lip balm and candles out of the wax.”

Caring for the bees also supports STEM learning for K–12 students. “I’m a strong proponent of technology in education. I wanted kids to see how they can be involved in agriculture and technology at the same time,” Jacob says.

Tara Nattrass

Tara Nattrass Managing Director of Innovation Strategy, ISTE+ASCD

To that end, the school is using Raspberry Pi devices, with a connected Raspberry Pi camera running a Linux system through which the kids learn Python. “We put the camera right at the entrance of the beehive and collect visual data,” she says.

“We programmed it to take a picture every minute or two minutes and send those to an Amazon Web Services cloud-based system. The kids also use existing Python code to teach an artificial intelligence algorithm. It is free AI code that we adapted to our photos,” she says. Students also use their Chromebooks to interact with the data, all of which helps them understand the health of the colony.

STEM Projects Help Students Solve Real-World Problems

Hands-on field projects can be an important part of a STEM curriculum.

With field projects, young people “are using technology in ways that align with the world of work, creating authentic, meaningful learning opportunities,” says Tara Nattrass, managing director of innovation strategy at ISTE+ASCD.

In the California Area School District project, students are “learning Big Data collection out in the field, computer technology skills and programming, where we take somebody’s code and adapt it to our specific needs,” Jacob says.

“There’s also the science of bees, understanding bees and understanding the challenges that our bees are experiencing because of climate change, herbicides and pesticides,” she says.

The percentage of surveyed students who said their STEM knowledge increased because of their after-school experience

FCS’s Kuhn points to several key lessons. “Students are doing authentic open-ended research, where they’re collecting data and then asking questions about that data to see what kind of trends and patterns they can spot, and how they can gain more information about the bees’ behavior,” he says. Overall, “we’re applying things to the real world, trying to figure out solutions to real problems.”

LEARN MORE: More schools should use technology for mastery-based learning.

Beekeeping Connects Students to Larger STEM Goals

Beekeeping projects can work in support of a school’s overall STEM goals and strategies .

For Jacob, whose school is within an agricultural community, bees are just one way to connect STEM to agrarian concerns. “We have a lot of animals on campus for teaching and learning. We have goats, chickens and fish, we have dogs for dog therapy, and we apply many of the STEM components in working with the animals,” Jacob says.

For other schools looking to take STEM tech into the field in support of mastery-based and project-based learning, a few best practices apply.

For bees, in particular, “there’s a little bit of expertise needed,” Kuhn says. “The tagging is kind of complicated. You have to develop protocols for how you handle the bees and make sure you’re not hurting them. It is a technically advanced project.”

It’s equally important, ISTE+ASCD’s Nattrass suggests, to give students the tools and encourage them to use the technology in ways that align with real-world experience.

“Students should have opportunities to use technology as designers and creators, mirroring the ways in which technology is seamlessly integrated across industries,” she says.
