Apple is fixing a big subscription billing frustration on your iPhone

No more diving into the Settings app.

App Store Iphone 13 Pro

Apple has issued a note to developers to explain a new feature that will make it easier for people to deal with App Store payment issues without having to delve into the Settings app to do it.

Currently, people who have a billing problem when making a subscription payment are left with no option but to go and find the issue and fix it themselves in the Settings app. That's all changing so long as those people are using iOS 16.4 or iPadOS 16.4 or later.

Apple also says that there is no need for app developers to do anything to implement the change.

Issue resolved

Apple shared details of the tweak in a post to its developer website , saying that people will soon be able to fix their own billing issues right from within the affected app.

"Soon it will be easier than ever for your customers to resolve payment issues, so they can stay subscribed to your content, services, and premium features," Apple says. "Starting this summer, if an auto-renewable subscription doesn’t renew due to a billing issue, a system-provided sheet appears in your app with a prompt that lets customers update their payment method for their Apple ID."

Right now the same payment fix involves opening the Settings app and spelunking through the Apple ID section.

The iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4 updates are already available for download — iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1 are the latest available at the time of writing — so developers can be relatively sure that this mechanism will be available to their users.

The feature will of course also be part of the iOS 17 update that is expected to be announced at WWDC23 in June. That's the software that will power Apple's best iPhone of the year, the iPhone 15 Pro , as well as the rest of the iPhone 15 lineup when it goes on sale this fall.

How To Fix iPhone Asking For Payment on Free Apps

Nick deCourville

  • Making sure you are signed in with the correct Apple ID is a top priority. You can always check by navigating to Settings > [Your Name].
  • Understanding Apple’s rules and regulations regarding the App Store is an essential part of the process.
  • If all else fails, you may want to consider contacting Apple Support.

how to solve billing problem on iphone

Are you having issues with your iPhone asking for payment when downloading a free app from the App Store? Fortunately, a solution is available. Apple has specific guidelines and processes for downloading apps from the App Store, and some of these policies may be preventing you from using your Apple ID for free items.

Looking at Apple’s own guidelines for downloading items from the App Store, I’m going to explain what you can do to fix your add payment issues while also looking at removing payment methods from Apple ID. I will also explore your options concerning creating an Apple ID. Keep reading to learn more about the App Store.

Why is Apple Making Me Add Payment for a Free App?

There are a number of reasons why Apple may require a payment method even if you are attempting to download a free app from the App Store. Possible reasons for this include having an outstanding balance with the App Store, issues with the current payment method as well as any potential ongoing subscriptions.

While you can try to set up an account without a payment method, you will likely have few options outside of entering a valid payment method . However, if you download a free app, you will not be charged for it.

Of course, you can always check your payment method by navigating to Settings > [Your Name] > Payment & Shipping . You can select Add a New Payment Method, or click the card if you already have one associated with your account to edit it.

How to Download Free Apps on iPhone Without Payment Method

Naturally, anything you download from the App Store is going to be attached to your Apple ID. Thus, you typically need your Apple ID on iPhone, your Apple ID on Mac and likely your Apple ID on Windows PC as well. While you can also try to create a new Apple ID , this is likely to be more of a mess than it is worth. Instead, check the options below to see if any of them work for you.

Note that while you can create a new Apple ID and see if that works, I want to stress that this would likely be annoying unless your primary Apple ID has very little on it. Not only would this make app purchases from the App Store particularly annoying, but it may limit your access to other things , such as Apple Music or Apple Books. Read below to learn about better solutions.

How to Check Your App Subscriptions

If you are having issues downloading or updating apps on your iPad and iPhone without a valid card, it may be due to a subscription that is tied to your account. Per Apple’s own rules , the company states “You might need to have a payment on file, even if the app you want to download is free”.

This may mean that if you have anything on your account that requires a payment method, yet your payment method is invalid, you will not be able to download anything without validating your current payment method.

This potentially means that a subscription may be preventing you from downloading apps without payment information. Fortunately, checking your subscriptions is easy.

Time needed:  1 minute

To check or delete your subscriptions, follow these steps:

Tap Your Name

If you have any active subscriptions, you may want to consider the cost of removing them versus adding another form of payment should you decide you want the subscription service.

How to Remove a Payment Method

According to Apple’s own rules concerning the App Store, you are able to remove a payment method from an existing Apple ID once you sign in to the App Store , the iTunes Store or Apple Books. You will not be asked about a valid credit card, debit card or source of payment until you try to make a purchase.

While some users claim that they can download free items without entering their payment options, you cannot remove a payment method if you have a subscription or any outstanding payments. If you have an unpaid balance payment issue, you can replace the information, but you may not be able to delete the payment method.

Nonetheless, follow these steps to remove a payment method:

  • From your iPhone, go to Settings .

Tap Your Name iPhone Payment Free Apps

  • Tap your current payment method.

Choose Remove Payment Method iPhone Payment Free Apps

Remember that if you are using an existing Apple ID within the App Store for the first time, payment details are necessary to download anything. This is according to Apple’s own rules concerning the App Store.

Things to Note

If you’re having issues downloading free apps from the App Store, there are some things you should remember concerning how Apple bills you for your App Store purchases. Be aware that Apple does not charge certain purchases to your Apple ID balance. For example, you are not able to charge gifts to your Apple ID balance.

If you purchase a gift or gift card, you will receive a charge to your primary valid payment method. You should also be aware that certain subscriptions will not be charged to your Apple ID.

If you are still having issues, you can navigate to this Apple website to try and reach out to an Apple representative. Select your region and device. You may have to experiment with selections until you reach a representative. You can also visit your local Apple Store to schedule a Genius Bar appointment. Remember that app availability also depends on region and location .

If you’re having issues downloading free apps from the App Store, the easiest solution is to check to see if you have any unpaid subscriptions or an unpaid balance anywhere. You can follow the steps above to check. Check your purchase history, or make sure you have an Apple ID in the first place. These simple steps should get you back on track. If not, you may want to consider contacting Apple about your situation.

Of course, being able to purchase apps on the App Store can be quite helpful, so you may want to consider adding your payment in settings anyway. Nonetheless, try the above recommendations and solutions and see if they work for you. If you know something we don’t, or just have any information to share, let us know in the comments below.

I recently had a fraud charge on my bank account, so I had to get a debit card, each time I try and add a payment method it says “ The credit card expiration year must be between 2022 and 2042. Expiration dates can’t be in the past.” yet the expiration date is literally between 2022 and 2042, how tf do I fix this

I have used multiple forms of payments and each one is coming up as “failed” how do I fix this issue?

I lost my credit card that is on my iCloud account to purchase storage. When the charge of .99 was being taken out, of course it was declined. I can’t remove my lost card, and add a new card. When I tried it tells me my new card can’t be used for iTunes. I don’t want iTunes. All I want is my storage. Help me please. What am I doing wrong. Thank you kindly

We are being charged 3 payments of 1-49 ea. How do we cancel? It only seems a small amount but we are pensioners now. Please help.

Are the payments part of a subscription?

I am trying to update my CCRD in iTunes (using the iTunes software on my PC). I go to my account and click on Manage Payments and nothing happens. The Manage Payments window won’t load. I have updated the software and that didn’t work.

I keep updates payment details.

I am not able to update my payment cards.

I have been trying to use my Paysera bank credit card from Algeria. I tried every possible way to add it to “payment method”. It always says “Your Payment Method Is Not Valid In This Store”. I would like to know if there is another way I wanted to subscribe in iCloud and Apple Music.

Hello. My iCloud is almost full. I’ve received messages that I need to make a payment. I bought a Visa gift card to do this and it will not accept my payment method. I am not good with these things and I really don’t want to lose my pictures. What am I doing wrong? Can you help me? Obviously I’m not very good with these things. Please help.

I mean trying to update my payment for iCloud how do I do it

Hiyah, trying to update my new card for payment. Tried settings then icloud comes up with” theres a problem’ help!

Does your card work on payment platforms when you’re not using your iPhone?

Everytime I try to add my card it tells me to update my info and try again. I’ve tried re logging in, re changing my country/region, I have no unpaid transactions, no active subscriptions, I’ve tried adding it to Wallet and it adds then says “no eligible card found in wallet”, nothing. However my boyfriends card can be added and used just fine. But it makes no sense because we both go through the SAME bank and both have VISA. Why doesn’t mine work but his does?

Hi Alexis. Have you tried entering your card’s information into your boyfriend’s phone? Doing this will help determine whether the problem is your card or your phone. If your boyfriend’s phone doesn’t accept your card’s information either, you may need to contact your bank and see if the problem stems from their end. If your boyfriend’s phone does accept your card’s info, the problem is most likely your phone. If you find that the problem is your phone, there are a few things you can do from here. The first step we’d recommend taking is to fully back up your …  Read more »

I can’t add Payment method to my iPhone

Hi, i have a problem to pay my monthly icloud payment. earlier, it was ok but now facing promblme. I have completed all the formalities of payment method 2-3 times but error is found “can not connect to iTunes Store”.

Please help. Syed Tahir Hussain

Check your Internet connection and try restarting your device. If you’re on a PC or Mac try troubleshooting your firewall to see if that’s part of the issue. Try reaching out to Apple support as well to see if they are having any kind of server issues that are keeping you from connecting.

I need to buy more space on my iCloud but I couldn’t register my verve card on my payment method and I tried it numerous times And it keeps saying invalid

hello , i am a citizen of kosovo , and i have problems payment

Hello I used to have a card that worked for my purchases before but I removed all the money inside it now I want to restart my plans and it’s saying declined is it possible because there’s no money inside?

its still like that and i dont have any subscription and any unpaid apps

I change my I’d and I try to add new payment method but is showing me invalid card number please what should I do

It’s possible that Apple does not support your payment method. Maybe you should try using another card.

i have tried all the steps and still unable to add my card keeps saying payment method declined

If you keep getting a message saying you’ve used an invalid payment method on your iPhone, you might want to consider trying a different card to see if that works. Sometimes companies don’t like certain cards.

i can’t able to add my new card, I follow all step

I’m curious if there might be something about the card that you are trying to add that Apple doesn’t like. If you can, try using a different card to see if that works.

My prepaid balance is high enough to pay the amount of what I’m going to purchase. Yet, it is still like this. What to do? I also can’t download appa that there is no payments ☹️☹️

Update Payment Details on iOS Problem: How to Fix

By Danny Maiorca 2 comments Last updated March 16, 2023

Apple Pay is arguably the most convenient payment method for iPhone users. Once you’ve added your card, you can pay with your smartphone in several countries around the world. It’s great for doing your grocery shopping, and you might also find it useful for purchasing consumer items.

Adding and removing payment details to your Apple Wallet is usually a stress-free experience. But sometimes, you might encounter issues updating your cards. When that happens, you can try a selection of fixes for the issue.

This article will give you three things you can try if you’re encountering issues with updating payment details on iOS and your old card won’t remove itself.

Give Your iPhone a Restart

Try signing in and out of your apple id, try updating your ios software, give these tips a try if your ios payment details won’t update.

In some cases, you might encounter issues with updating your payment details in iOS because of a glitch. As annoying as this is, the good news is that the solution to this issue often isn’t too difficult.

Giving your iPhone a restart can help fix this problem. How you do this depends on the device you have, but you can try by manually turning your device off and on again – before also attempting to force restart if that doesn’t work.

After that, check your Apple Wallet to see if the problem has gone away. If it hasn’t, you can try the following two tips.

Screenshot showing how to get to the Apple ID tab in iOS

If you’re still struggling to update your payment details in iOS, signing in and out of your Apple ID might help you tackle the issue. Below, we’ve outlined the steps you’ll need to follow for this:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • At the top, you’ll see your name with “ Apple ID, iCloud+, Media & Purchases ”. Click on this tab.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the next window. You’ll see an option titled Sign Out ; click on this.
  • After you’ve signed out, you’ll see a tab in the Settings app called Sign in to iPhone . Select this.
  • Enter your Apple ID details and complete the verification process if you need to.

Screenshot showing the interface of the iPhone Settings App

If you’re still struggling to update your Apple Wallet payment details, you can also try updating the software on your iPhone. Sometimes, when you use an outdated version of iOS, your phone won’t function correctly.

Here are the steps that you must follow to update your software:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to General .
  • Click on Software Update .
  • If you need to update the software on your iPhone, select the prompt to do so and enter your passcode if asked. Then, wait for your software to upgrade.
  • Enter your passcode when your iPhone turns back on to begin using it again.

Having your payment details not update is annoying and inconvenient in equal measure. But the good news is that you can try and fix the issue with a selection of steps. The best place to start is by turning your iPhone off and on again, but you can also try signing and out of your Apple ID.

Updating the software on your phone might help you fix the issue, too – and you can always try adding and removing your cards later to see if the problem has solved itself.

iPhone Stuck in SOS Mode? Here's How to Get Regular Service Back

If you're in an area with good cell phone coverage and your iPhone still says "SOS," here's what to do.

how to solve billing problem on iphone

If you're in a pinch, the iPhone's Emergency SOS service could be a lifesaver.

When you're traveling outside of populated areas, your iPhone might display "SOS" in the corner, which means you don't have your regular cellular service and you can only make emergency calls.

CNET Tech Tips logo

What's worse is that when you get back to an inhabited area with good cell coverage , you still might not be able to resume regular phone service. That pesky SOS status stays in the corner of your screen, and no matter how much you raise your phone to the sky, you still can't get access to the internet.

What gives? Lets take a look at the iPhone's Emergency SOS via Satellite service and what you can do when your iPhone gets stuck in Emergency SOS mode.

While you're here, check out how to use Emergency SOS via Satellite to contact 911 and how to prevent your iPhone from automatically calling 911 .

What exactly is Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite?

Emergency SOS via Satellite is a feature on the Apple iPhone 14 and later that allows you to get in contact with emergency services and share your location with them, even if you don't have cellular network service.

Whenever you don't have cellular service or Wi-Fi, you'll see an SOS in the corner of your iPhone, indicating that you can use Emergency SOS via Satellite to get emergency help.

Note : There's also Emergency SOS on every iPhone, and while this feature does call your local emergency number and share your location information with emergency services, it requires you to have service. It's not the same as Emergency SOS via Satellite.

So what's the problem with SOS mode?

Once your iPhone loses service and is in Emergency SOS mode, your device might have trouble finding your network, even if you're back in an area that has service. You might notice that someone else in the area has service while you don't, or vice versa. Luckily, there are various ways to tackle this issue.

Emergency SOS in action.

What to do if you're stuck in Emergency SOS mode

According to Apple , if you see "SOS" or "SOS only" in the status bar, you can do the following to help your device find a cellular network:

  • Make sure that you're in an area with cellular network coverage . You can check in with people around you who have service, while you don't.
  • Turn your cellular data off and on . Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Cellular Data off and back on.
  • Restart your iPhone . On the iPhone X and later, hold either of the volume buttons and the side button until the power off slider appears, and then drag the slider. Wait 30 seconds and then press and hold down on the side button to turn your iPhone back on. If you have an older iPhone model, here's how to restart it .
  • Check for a carrier settings update . Your carrier may send out a carrier settings update to improve your cellular network connectivity and performance. As long as you're connected to the internet, go to Settings > General > About and check to see if there is an update available.
  • Turn your cellular line off and on . Go to Settings > Cellular > your phone number and turn your cellular line off and on. If you're not using an eSIM, remove the SIM card from your phone and put it back in.
  • Update your iPhone. If the software has a bug, it may be causing issues with your cellular service. To check for a software update, go to Settings > General > Software Update . You'll need internet for this to work, so Wi-Fi would be your only option if you can't connect to cellular.
  • Reset your network settings . WARNING: this will reset all your Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings and VPN settings, so only do this if you've tried all of the above first. If you're fine with that, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone  > Reset > Reset Network Settings .

Three tips to help get service on your iPhone

Try restarting your iPhone, turning Cellular Data off and on and checking for any software updates.

Lastly, if network connection issues persist, Apple suggests contacting your phone carrier in case there are issues with your carrier or account that could be affecting your service, like outages in your area or an unpaid account.

If you're traveling internationally, and get stuck on SOS when you arrive, make sure that data roaming is enabled. You can go to Settings > Cellular > your phone number and toggle on Data Roaming .

Philips Hue smart lightbulbs

how to solve billing problem on iphone

Signify, the company that owns Philips Hue, originally announced early support for the Matter standard, and then delayed adding it. Now an unknown number of users are saying that they are seeing this random increase in brightness.

"After extensive analysis, we have identified an interoperability issue with the Matter smart home standard," Signify spokesperson Kate Helander told The Verge , "in which random temporary radio traffic disruptions are incorrectly recognized as legacy switch power toggles, turning low brightness lights to full brightness."

It's not clear whether the issue lies with Signify, or with the Matter standards body, the Connectivity Standards Alliance. But Signify has now announced that it will ship a fix for the issue within a week.

In the meantime, Signify says users who are being affected by this problem should disconnect their Hue Bridge from Matter. The company notes that users may have to do this in both the Matter app, and in iPhone settings.

Matter is a comparatively new standard that aims to make it possible for users to buy smart home devices from multiple vendors, each of whom has their own proprietary technology. Apple, for instance, supports Matter so that its users are not constrained to only using HomeKit-enabled devices.

Back in August 2023 , Signify announced Matter support across its range of smarthome products. Those include security cameras, but as yet there have been no reported bugs in anything but the lights.

I miss the days where lightbulbs were just lightbulbs and not mini-computers.

sflocal said: I miss the days where lightbulbs were just lightbulbs and not mini-computers.   That's an odd take - you surely realize that lightbulbs are still lightbulbs and the "smart bulbs" are just meant for those who want automation or customization inside the bulb?

I had this issue a few months back, and even bought new bulbs, thinking the bulbs were the issue. What solved it for me was to remove th Hue bridge from HomeKit (it had been there for ages) and re-add it. My guess is that the way it integrates into HomeKit now is vastly different (and HomeKit is) from what it was a few years back.

If a message says 'billing problem with previous purchase' or 'verification required'

If these messages appear, you may be unable to make purchases, download free apps or use subscriptions. To fix the issue, change your payment method. If you can't change your payment method, you can redeem a gift card and use the balance to pay for any unpaid orders.

Change your payment method

You have an unpaid balance because Apple was unable to charge your payment method for a previous purchase. Add a new, valid payment method, then remove the old payment method. The new payment method will be charged automatically. When the outstanding balance has been paid, you can make new purchases or use subscriptions again.

Use an Apple Gift Card or App Store & iTunes gift card to pay an unpaid balance

Purchase an Apple Gift Card or App Store & iTunes gift card .*

Redeem the gift card .

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, then tap your name.

Tap Media & Purchases.

Tap View Account.

Tap Purchase History.

Tap the order with red text that says Amount You Owe.

Tap Pay with Apple ID Credit.

After you’ve paid for the unpaid order, you can make purchases with your remaining Apple Account balance.

* Gift cards aren't available in all countries or regions.

If you use Family Sharing

If you use Family Sharing and purchase sharing is turned on, the family organiser's payment method is charged for all family members' purchases. If you're the family organiser and you or a family member can't make purchases, change your payment method .

If you're not the family organiser, ask the family organiser to change their payment method. Or  redeem a gift card and pay your unpaid order .

If you still need help

If you are still unable to resolve your unpaid balance, contact Apple Support .

For more than a decade, Britain has been governed by the Conservative Party, which pushed its politics to the right, embracing smaller government and Brexit. Last week, that era officially came to an end.

Mark Landler, the London bureau chief for The Times, explains why British voters rejected the Conservatives and what their defeat means in a world where populism is on the rise.
