So the final result is a file with an html extension? If so, other than my PC, does MS offer a server to host it on?

Thanks, Dan

' src=

No, not that I am aware of. There are free hosting sites out there if you look around. But just because you can create a web site in Word does not necessary mean you should. I am just showing you want can be done in Office 2016.

OK, thanks.

This article describes how Global Administrators and SharePoint Administrators in Microsoft 365 can create sites (previously called "site collections") in the SharePoint admin center . For info about creating sites and adding users and groups to them by using Microsoft PowerShell, see Create SharePoint sites and add users with PowerShell .

For info about creating site collections in SharePoint Server, see Create a site collection in SharePoint Server .

Create a team site or communication site

Go to Active sites in the SharePoint admin center , and sign in with an account that has admin permissions for your organization.

If you have Office 365 operated by 21Vianet (China), sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center , then browse to the SharePoint admin center and open the Active sites page.

Select Create .

The Create button on the Active sites page.

If you go to Resources > Sites in the Microsoft 365 admin center and select Add a site , it opens Active sites in the SharePoint admin center in a new tab, and opens the Create a site panel.

Select Team site (to create a Microsoft 365 group-connected team site), Communication site , or Other options to create a new team site without a Microsoft 365 Group.

The Create a site panel.

Follow the steps to specify a site name, owner, language, and other settings. When you're done, select Finish .

If you enter a site name and another site already exists at the default address for that name, the site address will automatically be changed to an available address. For example, if you enter "Marketing" as the site name, and you already have a site at /sites/marketing, you will receive a warning This site address is available with modification and will be offered a new URL automatically at /sites/marketing2. If you want to re-use the URL "marketing" for the new site, you need to permanently delete the existing site or delete the redirect at that address .

Create a classic site

We recommend using the new site templates for all your new sites. However, if you need to create a site that uses a classic template, you can do so using the following steps:

Go to Active sites in the SharePoint admin center , and select Create .

At the bottom of the panel, select Other options .

Image of the site creation panel with admin controls highlighted.

Under Choose a template , select More templates .

More templates in the Choose a template list.

In the Title box, enter a name for the site.

In the Web Site Address drop-down lists, select a domain name and a URL path—either /sites/ or **/teams/—and then type a URL name for the site.

In the Template Selection section, in the Select a language drop-down list, select a language for the site. You can enable the SharePoint multiple language interface on your sites, but the primary language for the site will remain the one you select here.

It's important to select the appropriate language for the site, because once it's set, it cannot be changed. After creating a site, verify the locale and regional settings are accurate. (For example, a site created for Chinese will have its locale set to China.)

In the Template Selection section, under Select a template , select the template that most closely describes the purpose of your site.

For more information about the classic templates, see Using templates to create different kinds of SharePoint sites .

In the Time Zone box, select the time zone that's appropriate for the location of the site.

In the Administrator box, enter the user name of the person you want to be the site administrator. You can also use the Check Names or Browse button to find a user to make site administrator.

In the Storage Quota box, enter the number of megabytes (MB) you want to allocate to this site. Do not exceed the available amount that is displayed next to the box.

In the Server Resource Quota box, accept the resource quota default. This setting no longer affects the resource amounts available for the site.

Select OK .

So you've seen awesome websites but you want to make your own, right? Then just follow these steps.

  • Download Microsoft Publisher 2007 at Microsoft - Official Home Page if you haven't yet.
  • Open it up.  Should find it here: Start> All Programs> Microsoft Office> Microsoft Office Publisher 2007.
  • Click on Blank Page Sizes, then Web Sites.  Or if you want a design just scroll down and click Web Sites, then choose a design.
  • A big box should pop up.  Choose what you would like on your site here.
  • Click on the box where it says "Your Website Name Here" or something like that.  Here, write the name of your site.
  • Make a slogan where it says "Your business tag line here. "  To make a logo, use this:  Insert> Picture> From File/ Clip Art. Insert this picture on every page.
  • Add what you would like on your site.  You can even add links by clicking on a text or a picture, right clicking and selecting "Hyperlink". Choose the destination of your link in the box.
  • Add pages by right licking on a page number at the bottom then add a page, or go to insert and click Page.  Then choose your page type.
  • To preview your site, first click on Web Page Preview at the top.  It looks like a magnifying glass on paper. This will show you what it looks like. Now do what you did to get to add a page but click on "Web Page Options" and click the box for Publish to the Web. Write down your own web address and click "OK".
  • For background sound, do the same but find the box that says "Background sound" and click "Browse".  Then choose your sound by right clicking on the options, then clicking "Play". Once you've found the best, double click it or single click it and click Insert.

If you need to create a Web page fast and don't want to waste time downloading and installing a complex HTML editor, you can use Word, the word processor included in the Microsoft Office 2010 suite. By default, Microsoft Office Word will save the document with formatting, so your Web page will contain a bunch of unintelligible characters. You can, however, select to output the document in plain text format.

Launch Microsoft Office Word 2010 and create or open a blank document.

Write or insert the Hypertext Markup Language code -- the programming language of the Web -- in the document. A simple Web page that displays a line of text looks like this:

<html> <head> <title>HTML Web Page Title</title> </head> <body> Your text goes here </body> </html>

Click "File" in the top left corner of the Word 2010 window and select "Save As" from the drop-down menu.

Type a name for your new Web page - "Index" for example.

Select "Plain Text (*.txt)" in the Save As Type drop-down box.

Select the folder where you want to save the Web page, for example "Desktop," and click "Save."

Close Microsoft Office Word 2010 if you don't need it anymore.

Right-click the TXT file you saved earlier and select "Rename" from the drop-down menu.

Select the "txt" extension and replace it with "html" or "htm" and press "Enter" to change the TXT file to a HTML file.

Open the Web page in a Web browser to test it.

I built this site in 15 minutes with Microsoft's new free tool

I created a website with Microsoft's new tool to see how it does in the real-world.

Caesars Juniors Mock Website

Microsoft launched a free tool for creating websites this week. The tool is aimed at small businesses that don't have a website. While I don't own a business, I run multiple American football teams in the UK, so I was curious to see if the tool could be a useful way to make a website.

The tool is free and has an option to create a website from content from a social media account. I know quite a few teams that only have social media pages, which could benefit from having a website. There are plenty of options out there, but I wanted to see how Microsoft's offering stacks up.

Setting things up

Microsoft Marketing Create Website

The setup process was as easy as advertised. When setting up my account within Microsoft's Digital Market Center, I had an option to link social media accounts. I then just clicked a few buttons to create a website based on our social media page.

We're relatively active on social media, and I do my best to keep the page up to date, so the website builder had a fair amount of information to go off of. The website the tool created did a decent job of pulling our "About Us" section and other core content from our Facebook page.

Customizing the site

Website Builder Customizing

The tool did a good job of pulling our information, but there were a few things to tweak. I had a few edits to make and a few items to delete. It isn't that surprising for an automated tool to leave a few things to change, and the edits were easy enough to do with the site builder.

I was happy to see that I could customize which images and social media posts appear on the website. I can also hide or add specific components. You can also upload your own images if you have ones that aren't on your social media page. These tools make it easy to get the content that you want onto a website.

Would I actually use this tool?

Caeasrs Juniors Website Builder

The real question is: if you're a small business, is it worth checking out this tool? There are plenty of options on the market, both free and paid. I'd say that this is a promising start to a tool that I hope expands over time.

All the latest news, reviews, and guides for Windows and Xbox diehards.

When Microsoft announced this feature, it highlighted that over 36% of small businesses don't have a website at all. That means that this tool isn't meant to convert someone over that already has a website. It's also not meant to compete with paid designs or professionally-built websites.

In my time working with it, it's a barebones tool that can quickly and easily make a serviceable website. Is the site I made with the tool as good as our actual team website ? No. Is it good enough that I'd consider it if I needed a free website? Sure.
